3D PRINTER?!

Ohmygosh my school got one (and sadly hooked it up AFTER I finished the 3d class T-T) and my teacher showed me a cute little teapot made on the 3d printer and it looked so cool =3

I know this thread is a few days old at this point but I just wanted to share some knowledge of 3D printing with y'all cos it's wonderful!

3D printing is, first of all, totally legit. To make a 3D print, you take a design you have in mind and render it into a 3D-capable format the printer can read. You can make literally anything you can think of--I used to print toys and trinkets on mine, as well as spare parts for my robots when they would break down--as long as you can fabricate it into a "blueprint", so to speak. Then, just like a 2D printer, the design is sent to the device and it's "printed". In this case, the "ink" is plastic (there are different types of plastic you can use for different quality prints) that is deposited onto a surface layer by layer by a robot arm. Depending on the size of the design and the quality of your printer, this can take anywhere from five minutes to five hours or more. The process of 3D printing smells like celery (or at least it did for our MakerBot), and I find it incredibly soothing to watch. Once it's done, you'll be able to actually hold your design in your hands, in the form of a plastic final product!
3D printing has other uses, too! Scientists are currently figuring out how to 3D print food products, and even organs and tissues for use in surgery.

I'm a huge 3D printing nerd (I have a lot of friends who are engineers), and I love talking about it so I had to throw in my two cents. If anyone's interested, I can post pictures of my designs and some stuff I've actually printed.

There are some pretty cheap ones out there so it doesn't surprise me. Not sure what they plan to do with it though considering the time it takes to print anything hahaha! I got to experience 3D printing and 3D scanning at a TED event I went to last month, it was really interesting to see but I was kind of put off by the time and the poor quality of the material... It's really, really easy to use if you use a template that's already been made or if you 3D scan one. It's a bit like using photoshop. I wouldn't know how to make a template of something though, that's a whole other task.

@MayorMudkip - I'm interested. Give us pictures:)

I've seen in TV someone's idea for business, they bought 3d printer and they print spatial jewelry.

(I would totally use it for figurines.)
