So, I've been having fun giving some villagers on my island custom catchphrases, as I've always loved this feature. Only Hazel and Audie have asked unfortunately. They haven't spread them as often as I was worried about, but here's the complete record of their sharing...

Hazel:
- To Marshal
- To Marshal again!!
- To Kid Cat

Audie:
- To Fang
- To Fang again, the very next day and yes i definitely asked Isabelle to change it before
- To Fang A THIRD TIME when they talked to each other a few days later

Which made me think... Do they share their catchphrases more often with villagers of the same species? I'm thinking it's probably my RNG acting up because that would be kind of a weird little quirk for Nintendo to include, but I thought I would ask in case anyone else has observed this.

Secondly...

Is it possible, if a villager already has a custom catchphrase, for them to pick up a DIFFERENT villager's custom catchphrase? I have been a little concerned about Audie or Hazel's overwriting the other, since it would be a pain to set them back how I want it with how the villagers ask so infrequently in NH.

Hmmm, I'm not sure, but eventually all (i'm pretty sure all) of my villagers have asked to call me something that Hamlet nicknamed me, haha :p

Also, I could be wrong, but I think they will ask you to change it, so I'm not too sure if they will just randomly pick it up on their own

They all call me toady which I assume they got from Lily.. I keep resetting them but in a day it's back to toady... I wish the game would completely reset their language and / or clothing if you complain 3 times about it....

Villagers will start copying custom catchphrases as well, half my villagers are now saying “of course” now after I gave someone a custom catchphras.

I never noticed anyone sharing their catchphrase, but the second I had a villager ask (I made Carrie say "dearie") now half my island is calling me dearie so I think maybe they only spread ones you've given them.

I meant the catchphrases, not the nicknames! As far as I can tell they won't share nicknames without asking you but they absolutely do share the custom catchphrases.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure it's only the custom ones.

I had changed Peanut's catchphrase to nutty and Chief picked it up, so I then told him to change it back to his default, harrumph, the next time he asked because I wanted it to just be his default and I'd been too lazy to reset it with Isabelle up until then. I then had Peanut saying harrumph for a little while. This is the only instance of custom catchphrases overwriting each other that I've had so far but honestly, that might only be because half of my villagers have literally never asked for a catchphrase change... I can also say that my only same-species villagers right now are Reneigh and Julian and I've never seen them share their custom catchphrases.

Yes. I don't really care if my villagers pick up each other's phrases, but I gave Muffy a custom one and then she picked up a custom one from someone else, and then picked up broseph from one of my jocks. Also Phil moved in two days ago and yesterday he'd already picked up a custom phrase from someone so that was funny.

I don't think it's species specific.
I noticed that villagers I've given a catchphrase to will ask me again once more villagers are copying the first one I gave them.
I can't remember for sure but I do think they can trade custom catchphrases (especially if multiple have the same one)

I’ve actually caught them sharing catchphrases. When you walk up to listen in to their conversations, I’ve had two or three actually picking up the other’s catchphrase. Of course, they were custom ones.

Nooooo

Well at least I know now, thanks for answering my question!!

I've definitely had them traded between villagers of different species, it just seems my wolves and squirrels exchange a lot more frequently but yeaaah I figured it was probably my rng 😆

I gave Mira “daredevil” because that’s what my dad calls her and now half the island is saying it.

I've had a similar thing I think, Marina and Snake were talking about how they don't have much in common but then Snake said they both like to say bloop and Marina said they must have more common ground than they thought! I actually kinda like how they point out that they're sharing catchphrases.

I've had them ask each other about some words they would use for something, and when the answering animal ends with their catchphrase, the other calls it brilliant and picks it up for themselves. :D They are cute.

I had that conversation with Cousteau and Celia--I think that's the convo where the sharing actually happens, because that's when Cousteau stopped saying "oui oui" and started saying "peep peep" in my town.

?: We gave Bam, a deer, the phrase "gay rights", and then he immediately like the next minute spread it to Leopold, a lion.

I've noticed my cranky's love to pick up catchphrases and it's kinda adorable. Wolfgang and Murphy got 'yeet' from Ozzie and it's like two grandpas trying to relate to the kids
