So I don't make another huge disaster happen, I have 2 questions:

1. Is it safe to have a downloaded version of New Leaf and a cartridge version on the same 3DS?

2. If yes to the first one, then is it safe to play the cartridge version on 2 different 3DSes?

I know that you can only have StreetPass and SpotPass active for 1 game on 1 3DS, yada, yada, yada...

I'm not 100% sure, but:

(1) It's "safe", but your downloaded version's save file and the cartridge's save file should be different. The cartridge one will save in the cartridge whereas the downloaded one should save onto your 3DS' SD card, meaning there theoretically should be two different towns.

(2) If by "safe" you mean save files aren't deleted, then yes it is. However, the 2nd 3DS player will be the resident of your town, that's it.

Again, check Google for confirmation but from what I know, that's how it works.

Yes to both questions. I have a digital and a physical copy of the game and I play on the same 3DS and I have no problems.
I sometimes use my brother's 3DS to play the physical version: to transfer money, move villagers in/out, etc. I heard that if you switch the physical version from one 3DS to another, it will count as if one day has past.

What? Uh no? It doesn't count as one day if you switch 3DS unless they have screwed up times and dates..
I use my cartridge copy interchangeably with my consoles. Never had any type of bad things happen. Only my digital version has caused problems on a few occasions but that was resolved with a new SD Card

He most likely had the dates messed up on the consoles because that's never happened to me and I have multiple 3ds'

I don't think it count as a day when switching physical copy to another 3ds. It hasn't happen to me before and I've successfully transfer villagers that way.

I'm sorry to ask, but what kind of problems?

Absolutely, I do this all the time. It doesn't affect your game in any way UNLESS the time set on the 3DS is different. that would change your game time, but you can just watch when the game loads and make sure the time Isabelle tells you is correct. If you own both consoles obviously just keep their time synced and you are fine.

actually, streetpass/spotpass are active for one TITLE, not one copy. I keep my cartridge in at all times and whenever I have a streetpass or spotpass I choose which version to pick it up in -- I can do it in either (you will not be able to get it in both). This is super-convenient because if one of my towns has an open villager slot I can pick all streetpasses up with my other town and I don't have to worry about getting someone's voided villager. Also I can pick which HHA plaza to pick up houses in when I'm somewhere I'm passing a load of people.

By hitting the home button after saving. Didn't mean to hit it. Went to backup my other digital games as usual with that Nintendo backup thing, told me my sd was corrupt and needed to be deleted and reformatted. Lost everything. Had to download everything again.

O.K., I thought it was something random. At least it's avoidable.

How is that avoidable?

EDIT: only reason I see it being avoidable is if you leave your game running 24 / 7

I imagine that the game was still saving when you hit the home button and closed the title, if you did close it.

Nope. It said the message it does when it's done saving.

Well, I guess the SD card had something wrong with it in the first place. I've been using mine for about a year with no problems, and my current town is on the downloadable version and no problems.

I hear that 16 and 32 GB SD cards don't work well with the 3DS for some odd reason.

Or you can stop assuming things. My sd card was working fine until the first corruption. My friend uses a 64GB sony one and he's had it since release. No problems there.
