I've been searching these forums for a bit and haven't quite found what I was looking for. Here's the deal: a villager approached me last night and said he was interested in moving. He asked once before, and I said no. This time, I encouraged him to leave and follow his dreams, as it were.

I never built a campsite- my 10th villager was someone who moved in from the town of someone I traded with. My question is: will my town now go back to just having nine villagers until I build a campsite (if I build one, that is)? Or is history likely to repeat itself, and I will get a second 10th villager from a friend and/or trading partner.

My town is fairly well developed in terms of trees and flowers. Ought I hurry to lay down some placeholder PWPs to make sure my basic layout is more or less preserved, just in case a next 10th decides to move in?

Thanks for reading.

A tenth villager wont just move in randomnly, but could come from streetpass or if you visit another town, i would but down placeholders to be careful

Hi! You're absolutely correct as far as I know. Now that your 10th villager is moving out, unless you decide to build a campsite the only way you'll get another 10th villager is through wifi-ing with other players. I would definitely recommend putting down some placeholder PWPs if you want to preserve your basic layout.

History will repeat itself.
You can also get them from when street-passing someone with moving villager.

Or maybe you can go to the exchange / giveaway thread, to choose your 10th villager on your own. :)

Thanks for replying- I will take your advice, Gizmodo. We can always use a couple more streetlights, right? And placeholder torches in my southern bamboo area will fit in just fine. Zen lamps would be better but I have no time to be choosy. :D

If you visit another one's town and talk to a villager, that villager could move to your town.

With the campsite, you can randomly get villagers and convince them to move to your town.

Thanks for the response, and for pointing out something I had not considered. I will be mindful of streetpassing, and I think I'll just turn it off for a bit.

Aye, Tengu, I know that the campsite is handy for screening applicants, so to speak, but I dunno...I just don't want one. I'll just have to take the risk, and live with the results. That's perfectly okay too.

edit: I type so slow that my posts don't automerge. Yeesh.

Yeah i think im going to turn off streetpass :)

This may be a dumb question, but how do you turn off street pass? I can see the option to turn off spot pass in the main menu. I went and spoke with Digby and he didn't offer me an option to turn it off--though it was through Digby that I turned on the streepass option.

Do I need to go into the 3DS setup options?

YAY! finally somebody else who agrees the campsite isn't worth it.

Now see, I like the campsite because I like camper games. We've scored some great furniture from our campers! I don't care about it for screening new residents.

I would definitely place pwp around your paths, I'm not finished but that's what I've been doing. I know what you mean about the lights, but they'll be easy enough to tear down and replace later. (I'm stuck with yellow benches since no-one will request anything else myself!) also keep in mind that natural features will help control their houses as well (rocks, immovable buildings, etc). I have an empty spot right now so I am hoping I have a couple more days before anyone shows up.

I'm curious how often wifi actually works, I have a group of friends, we wifi almost daily and talk to each other's townies, and not one has turned up in someone else's town yet. So it can't be automatic or we'd all have each other's townies by now.

I seriously hope that this is how it works out. And yes, I'm definitely laying down some PWPs- mainly torches, log benches, stone tablets, etc. It's going to feel very... tropical. Or like Animal Crossing meets Lost. We shall see.

Haha, I mainly don't like the fact that it becomes a pile of bricks when unoccupied. If it stayed looking like a tent, I might be persuaded to build one. Plus, I don't want my town to feel like a sterile, virtual gated community, where applicants are screened and rejected/accepted based on *insert quality here.* Nothing against folks who are really into trading villagers- it just isn't my style of play.

True, minigames are kinda nice...but I keep hearing about folks campsites lying dormant for a long time. Have you surrounded your campsite with PWPs or natural features to make it feel more like a campsite? I can see a hotspring and log bench really enhancing a campsite.

I actually like how the campsite looks, with or without a tent! Heh. I have the campsite not so much to screen potential residents but simply as a means to meet other animals. (There's the cafe, too. I love it when out-of-towners stop by for coffee.) I'm going to keep a checklist of villagers I meet. I want to see how long it takes to meet everyone. (Years, probably, years! This game may outlive me. )

I placed it stupidly so I don't have a ton of room, but it's got fir trees all around it and flowers, so it's actually pretty well screened -- and if I get a good PWP I'll put it next to it. A friend got the totem pole PWP and it looks amazing -- her campsite's in a far corner with tons of firs and the big totem pole. Even empty it looks great.

Yeah, most people seem to not mind the campsite's appearance, so I guess I'm in the minority there. That's okay. And CC, this game will outlive you, guaranteed. I'm still meeting new characters and finding new items on the GC version. :D I seriously miss the ability to breed hybrids though.

The totem pole...so jealous at the moment. brb, crying.

People have reported villagers moving from a town they visited when they didn't even talk to them, so the talking part doesn't seem necessary... ^^ Which is why it's weird when people get upset when you talk to the villagers they like.

No, there's an option to opt out of Streetpass just for the game when you're at the title screen.

that is so true! I still occasionally check my GC towns, and my Wii town. (I admit I totally abandoned WW on the DS. I don't know why.)

Tell me about it. I was like....WHY DIDN'T I GET THAT SO AWESOME?!?
