i just keep cycling. i know the villager will stay original b/c of the things i mentioned earlier with able sisters/retail
if you think you received a void then check the house on your 2nd cycle. like when isabelle says oh its been a while bla bla. if they are outside just keep tting within that day until you can check
you can really only tell for their house if they arent in boxes. then you can look up online what their interior looks like and match it to in-game to see if its 100%
their shirt, again look up online to see.
and the catchphrase you have to talk to them to find out.
if youre cycling and want to keep villagers original dont talk to any of them, fill up your retail, and change able's designs to hats/umbrellas.

Yup! Sometimes it can get hard, especially if you've been gone during an activity surge, but it's better to get info than to not get info. The main thing is to make sure you take a critical look at people who catch your eye, mainly, if you're worried about information overload (which can turn into a serious problem in bigger games)
