The fastest way to swim is to tap A to make your character stroke. Every tap is a stroke. Holding A is faster than nothing but it's much slower than propelling your character stroke by stroke.

It depends on how many bells you have. If you are at a point where you make a million bells (or more) in a week, then go ahead--it's not going to derail your AC life in any noticeable way. If it's half your savings, maybe pick something cheaper.

Oh man this is such a good point! if any visitor can swim any visitor can get anywhere. I'd also designed my island around the idea that I might need to close it off--my nook's is right in front of my airport mostly for that reason--and hadn't made this connection yet. That's a real issue.
