2002 is the year Animal Crossing: Population Growing (GCN) was released, the first title of the series. Rover mentions 2002 because it's the year the game, and himself, were introduced c:

That and that game he had the same roll with the train and all instead of Kappn which annoyed e as a kid. Rovers the best. It's a cute reference.
