just receiving the shiny charm increases your odds, you won't need to do anything else.
the original rates for shinys before charm was 1/4096 pre 70 chain and then after 70 chain its 1/1024
shiny charm raises it to 1/1365 and after 70 chains its 1/683.
that's all i'm pretty sure! if you go talk to the guy in the gamefreak building you can get the shiny charm!
