Yo! That's definitely a matter of opinion, but starting small seems like a good way to maximize success and figure out what works. I would jump to recommending certain plants, but your climate will affect what's easier or harder to grow. See if you can find some other gardeners in your area, or look up your favourite herbs and small veg and tips for growing in your area. I am imagining that you get more sun, which has got to be some sort of advantage? I've also found a lot of inspiration in a couple books about maximizing the space that's available, whether that's a balcony, windowsill or fire escape. And recycling containers to use for plants. I've kept a pot of chives alive sice last December through what seemed like unlikely and occasionally hostile circumstances (forgetting to water them). I've also had a pet spider plant and jade plant for several years, neither of which are edible, but they are practically indestructible.
