Just sitting here on YouTube, taking a break from (still) looking for a "perfect" town layout for my new town, Laelia, and I got to thinking what I actually consider a perfect town layout for myself. Started to think about it, and also got curious what YOURS would be, if you were given the chance to get it or actually try and find one when you restarted your town.

To be honest mine would be:

1. Brown Train Station Roof (Green is also acceptable).
2. Native fruit is Apples. I absolutely adore their colours and designs, especially the perfect apples.
3. Grass pattern is squares, snow pattern is stars.
4. Two or three lakes, with one being near the train tracks.
5. A lot of open space around the train tracks either left or right of the Train Station.
5. I'm not bothered too much by rocks, but absolutely no rocks close to the Train Station since they prevent me from plotting my Mayor's house and villagers houses in those areas.
6. Town Hall, Re-Tail and the Town Plaza are spread apart decently well, with the Town Plaza not being cramped by tight spaces (like in the corner of town or right up at the side of the cliffs).
7. Don't care about starting villagers.. but absolutely no mice, frog, gorilla/ape or hippo villagers. I'm honestly not a fan of them.
8. Preferably I'd like a "secret beach", size doesn't matter. Pitfall seeds go there so my villagers don't have a bad day.
9. River layout generally doesn't matter, but there are a few 'patterns' I look for. But I can make MOST river patterns work.

Overall, I when I create my towns I generally try to aim for at least half of these, with points 1, 2, 5 and 6 being pretty much mandatory for all of my Towns when I create them. 7 is also a semi-mandatory. I can tolerate those villager species if the town meets my requirements and has a villager I'm slightly attached too.

I?m still here wishing you luck, hopefully you will get your ideal town map soon!
Anyways, I just learned something new (probably because I?m not used to discussing AC games online) I never even considered the fact that towns could have different grass patterns...
I had to go to my screenshots to check which one I have, it seems I have triangles and my snow has squares.
To be honest, I?m not sure if knowledge like this is all that helpful, because the fact that I could have stars on my snow but don?t is probably the first thing I dont like so much about my town...^^ll Don?t get me wrong, I still don?t care much about patterns knowing that there are variations.

Now here is my town map for reference:
town map.jpg

here is what I liked about it at first:
  • the river stays mostly in the middle and parts the town into two evenly sized areas
  • there are quite few river bends which helps to find a secluded corner for my mayor?s house and a small garden (the yellow house in this case)
  • I thought pears might be a nice fruit and i was happy to see them as my town fruit. I wouldn?t have been disappointed if I had something else though.

now, I didn?t know that the pattern of the grass or the color of the roof of certain buildings could vary. I chose my town based on the map alone, I didn?t consider that there could be something that I can only see after leaving the train, which could determine my choice.

Here is what I think about my town now after spending hundreds of hours in it:
  • I like how close retail is to the beach and that there is an entrance to the beach almost in line with retail
  • I like how evenly things are spaced out and that the two town buildings are relatively close to the sides/corners of my map which leaves more space for landscaping. It also means that there is less "wasted" space.
  • Ideally the town hall could be closer to the train tracks because I have no good way of using the space behind it. However, I still think its at a very nice place overall.
  • the town hall is almost in line with the entrance to the campground and creates a little "entranceway", simmilar to what the trainstation does for the mainstreet. It also doesn?t "block" the entrance to the campground, which would probably bother me, espechially for placing paths
  • I like that there is a large river bend that?s almost symmetrical which allows for a nice bridge-layout
  • I like the "secret-beach", as you called it, because I can burry my pitfall there^^
  • I like that the rocks are all close to town buildings or the plaza so they don?t interfere with my paths
  • I like how the town plaza is pretty much centered and not up in a corner of the map.
  • I like my town fruit, pears, but I wouldn?t haven minded having most of the others (maybe I wouldn?t have liked oranges..). When I started I thought I would like pears and now I still like them and peaches the most. In the next game I might go for a peach-town but I don?t think the fruit is extremely important...in the end you can get rid of all the fruit-trees you don?t like, you will only miss the chance of growing the perfect version of your favorite fruit.
  • I don?t like the small little area in the top right because its 1-tile too small to place a player?s house onto. I?m sure I can make it work somehow but its bothering me a little...on the contrary, the large space the river creates on the other side of the land is perfect for a permanent PWP, so I?m not mad that it?s so close to the train tracks.
  • I like that my beach is on the right. This causes my museum to be on the left, together with all the buildings that I don?t frequently use. I didn?t know the mainstreet has a different layout depending on the side of your beach. But honestly, I think it?s nice that the museum is near a wall and on the left. It looks nice like this and I have a reason to visit that part of my mainstreet every day.^^
  • I don?t really care about the roof colors of my town buildings, in fact, I don?t even remember them clearly. I think my train station has a green roof and my town hall a blue one. The only other color is red/brown right? I have seen that before and I didn?t find it less-pretty. Although, admittedly it would be cool to have the same color for both, but by no means a necessity.

So yeah my town map pretty much IS my perfect town, aside from maybe minor problems. I figured that you wanted to know what people value in a town layout, which is why I explained what I like about my town.
Hopefully this is somewhat helpful. I wish you the best of luck!

Oooh, I've had this river layout a few times. Quite difficult to landscape, but man it looks great when you finish. Glad it's your perfect town! I'm sure I'll get mine soon, just a matter of time until the right conditions meet.

And yup, it helped! I was only curious in other people's opinions on what they like with their town layouts and what they deem 'perfect.'

Generally, I loved the fluidity of the river that separated the town, retail and town plaza from the remaining areas. This left me with a more open-minded space in my head, it enabled me to be more creative with my house plotting. Normally, I'm not too fussed about villager's houses. So long as they don't disrupt the paths, I couldn't care less. Hence why they are shown scattered across the map. The freedom is quite a relief, I'm not too fond of a cramped and compact region full of houses, and wandering villagers that don't know what to do with themselves. One drawback to the layout was the pond in front of the station, and with owning a shop alongside this, it makes it somewhat difficult to drop items near the station. It limits access and is overall a problematic aspect of the town. It restricts pathing possibilities and is not the greatest to first see upon greeting the town for the first time. With the pond in such an awkward place, I just planted a whole load of trees surrounding it to form a small overloaded region, then topped it with hybrids. This actually inspired me to consume my whole entire town with trees, and it was for the better too. The crammed areas of trees sort of developed and defined the path, which was then caked in pattern designs of a white brick, which I will show you now.

This design was actually found on Pinterest (this is where I get all my designs from), only it was not pictured in QR code format. So, instead I had to copy the pattern grid by grid. It was quite a relaxing task and obtained this pretty path in no time. This was a saviour though, it lifted the town visually, and I finally had control in my town.

My houses are very close in distance, very contradicting to what I mentioned before about the villager's houses, I know. I've found that I prefer Nicole and Laura's houses together. Thomas' house was removed as I disliked the arrangement of it and was overall a regretful decision. He will be moving back in soon, I just need to finish landscaping before considering him.

AAaaa finally found a town layout and it's NEARLY perfect but I've been at this for almost a week so IT'S GOOD ENOUGH lol.

YAY! I?m so happy for you. ^^

It has one iffy gross thing about it, being there are two permanent rocks extremely close to each other near the Town Hall (because of the river having rocks near it). I can make it work, but its just a little annoying to see. Thankfully the second rock is closer to the river in an area where there won't be bridges, so I can just make it into like a mini park area by the Town Hall.

I think my ideal town layout is my current one. It took me a long time to find it, but every time I think about restarting the thought of having to work my way through a different one turns me off 'cause I don't think I'll ever find a more perfect layout.

I love the symmetry of the river flow, although I do prefer eastern beaches. I wasn't fond of the placement of Retail and the Plaza at first but there's enough space for trees and bushes so it looks cute and it's very practical, I made kinda like a big street that goes all the way from the police station to Retail.

But the best part is definitely the Town Hall. I love how it's in the very center of the map, there's enough space for me to build a little plaza with a fountain on front of it and it's also right in front of the ramp that goes straight to the pier, also almost perfectly at the center of the map. And then I managed to create a neat little space behind it, close to the pond, where I placed my house. I love living near the river and being close to the Town Hall is also quite practical, you know, being mayor and all... haha :)

That river layout is one of my favourites.

- vertical river, makes fish easier to see
- barely any rocks because they're annoying
- loads of lakes because i think they're pretty (although they can take up room for PWPs)
- only 1 beach, not split into 2
- apples or cherries as native fruit bc again, pretty

though my town has none of this stuff lmao oops
congrats on finding a layout btw!!
