Pretty sure that's what they would do, I'm sure there is a few risks in doing that too though.

How?

Well first off, a missile based defense system wouldn't be unknown to our enemies, so they'd use countermeasures like decoy missiles (which have been in development and do exist), not to mention that our current one in place is only mediocre in tests, and probably wouldn't serve us too well in a real crisis.
