Growing up I wasn?t allowed to have gaming consoles [ Other than a Wii and handhelds like Gameboy?s, DS?s.] But recently I?ve gotten a step up in my savings purchased my own Gaming PC, which has opened my eyes to the wonders of videogames!
Now, with my own money coming in I wish to buy my own console.

I do plan to do full research on each of these items, but, it?s proven that no matter how much research you do, no one can tell you better about a product than a consumer.
I was hoping that I could get a few opinions/advice/or pointers on which is more preferred.

I should probably also add that many of my friends own an Xbox 360, and they assure me that there are still many years of games lined up for it.
But, newer is better, isn?t it?
Also PS4 doesn?t charge you for online play? and I?m a cheapskate..

At this point it's almost a toss up. You have to think "how long until I can buy the next one" if you go with the 360. Because yes there's still time left, years in fact, I think 2017 or 18 is the cut off for both 360 & PS3, a full library of games, both disk and diskless, and the disk based ones are on sale because they want to get rid of them for the XB1 & PS4. I recently bought a PS3 (since my 360 exploded) and I was worried if I was gonna regret it because "isn't newer better?" but at this point the XB1 & PS4 are lacking a lot in terms of games right now. The 360 really only is better than the XB1 & PS4 for the full library you can choose from, however I feel like you gotta check the games to make sure there's not requirements that have been turned off be Microsoft or the developers, due to the game being too old or successors being out already, which could possibly make finding titles a pain in the rear. But depending on what you're getting, shouldn't really be a big issue. But the XB1 & PS4 will eventually succeed the 360 (and PS3) in every way.

Although if I had to choose between the 360, XB1 and PS4, I'd screw Microsoft and go to the PS4. I'm sure someone will want to fight me on it, but the track record of the Xbox line is marred by too many past problems, and even current XB1 over heating issues. The PS4 had a disk drive issue that's been resolved, while the overheating is random and Microsoft says it's not happening when people on YT post about it all the time. At any rate, I'd prefer to avoid all that drama again. PS4 is at this point slated to be the best and will offer the most for your money. The only reason I feel to take a step back and buy a 360 or PS3, is if there are games on that system that are locked on there that you want. Meaning there probably won't be a PS4 or XB1 download version later and since backwards compatibility is gone, you can't get an XB1 and double dip of course. Everyone knows that lol

Newer is sometimes better, but the old consoles are cheaper! I always tend to wait a year or so with new consoles just for a better price and a couple more games. With both the ps4 and xbone, the lineup isn't honestly that great for the time being so you wont do yourself much harm by putting off a purchase for another year or so.

I had a tonne of fun with my 360 but unless you like halo and all that there are probably some better platformers / rpgs on the ps3. The majority of really good titles are cross platform so yeah, can't really go wrong with either when they are under $200. Thats just my opinion though as most of the time I go for singleplayer over multiplayer which seems to be the opposite of what you are after. If you get a 360, then your gamertag will carry over to the xbone and you will still have common ground with your friends if they ever invest in one.

go the 360 if you can get a good deal!

While its probably that there's definitely a year or two of games planned for the 360, the console will more than likely lose support much like the Wii ultimately has thanks to the Wii U. Largest user base guarantees a little more support though, but once enough people hop ship to next gen consoles expect it to dwindle fast. Ideally you'll want to future proof, but right at this moment most of the games on next-gen aren't exactly must haves and in some cases just a big expensive indie box.

PS4 does charge for SOME online play. F2P titles like Blacklight and Planetside 2 will not require PS Plus, along with MMO titles like FF14. Titles like Battlefield 4 though will require an active PS Plus subscription.

PS4. I, myself, don't personally own one, but just get PS4. I don't know about you, but I personally am not a fan of Microsoft's greedy tactics. Besides, look at all the stuff that they TRIED to add into the XBox One, but had to take out due to people being really upset with the news. I am not even sure what kinds of crap they still kept, like the having to log on at least once every 24 hours or your game won't work with online, etc. Also, the thing with used games not working, this would make it impossible to bring a disk to a friends house and play the game on their XBox One, unless they took that out as well. I don't remember all the stuff they did, or any of the stupid ideas they got rid of. I just think it would be good to steer clear of XBox, because I can't even imagine what they will try with the next XBox, if they last that long, if they tried all that crap already.

There aren't an amazing amount of games out for either the XBox One or the PS4, but just wait, it is going to be great, and the PS4 will be a much better, future proof investment. You never know what might happen if you just bought a several year old console, the company might run into money troubles like Nintendo and shut down the servers, making your system useless for anything other than single player gaming, which gets stale fast.

I would like to thank you all for your answers, suggestions, and comments. It's shown me a few good points that I haven't considered, and conformed others.
Personally, I have never appreciated the way Microsoft does things or handles people. I always felt that they always thought more as a company than a community. That's why I've always been such a fan of Nintendo. They actually show concern and thought for their consumers and their products.
But, after almost a full night of researching the new gen, I've come to to the conclusion that they are just *too* new. There's still so many bugs, limited library, and add on's to create and/or work out.
So, due to almost all of my friends having a 360, i might be able to work out some deals and get it for under $150, and enjoy playing with my friends for a few years before they cut every off.
After that I'll see if I can talk my friends into PS4.

And it's not like even after they turn off the 360, that you can't keep playing and collecting games for it if that's what you end up getting. You're just more likely to be the last one playing. I still pick up N64 games I never ended up getting, and like I said I just got a PS3, so it's sorta in the same boat as the 360 in terms of people moving onto the newer system, but still having years of life left in it. Heck people still play Dreamcast.

Watch out if you are buying one second hand! Anything xbox that was released before 2010 is more prone to rrod and bricking. 2010 was the Jasper chip and everything after that was the 'slim' version, which are both pretty stable, so just keep in mind if you are getting one of the old models.

Being only Nintendo Master Race and PC, I don't know too much about the other consoles.

I'd recommend comparing the exclusives for each console and figuring out which of those games you like more. I believe the PS3/PS4 exclusives are pretty good, with Contrast, Ratchet and Clank, Sly Cooper and LittleBigPlanet being good series.

This. I do want to say that the non-slim Jaspers are fine though. I have a Jasper 360, here it is 2014, and it still runs perfectly. If you buy used though, you don't know what you're going to get if you buy a non-slim 360.

I agree with a lot of the others here. Gaming is one of my main hobbies, and has been for about 25 years. The Xbox 360 has a great library of games, plus it's cheap now. The Xbox One and the PS4 are too new. IMO, they only each have a few good games and that's it. I'm sure more good ones will be announced this week at E3, but these games aren't coming out for months. Fall at the minimum. If you want a console now to play with your friends over the summer, go with the 360.

ps4 cause the xbox one overheats my friends room so much we sit there and play and its an oven inside that house. theres nothing coming to play and everything is too expensive.
