Well, gas is costing people a lot of money on top of other expenses like food. So if you get free food, that's just one less thing you have to pay for. That way, you save money.

Haha, must be nice. Whenever I umpire I get free concession food, but it's not nearly as good as what you get.

Except I don't get paid to do it, haha. It's a "tips only and CD sales" kind of thing... which isn't bad in of itself, I guess. Paid cafe gigs are a thing of the past, it seems! It's ridiculous, every local place that used to have paid live music doesn't have ANY live music anymore. The only gigs that still pay are weddings and dinner parties held by extravagant, rich folk.

atleast you get good food and you enjoy it

$100 for 3 hours? Not quite that at the cafe... it varies from day to day, and I don't keep any of the money I get from CD sales since I'm still paying off what it took to make it.

Private gigs are another story... my rate is over 3 times what you quoted for three hours... and I'm actually on the cheap side of the live music spectrum, if you'd believe it. Most guys charge $300 PER HOUR for weddings... I'm not quite that arrogant, haha.

But I definitely enjoy it!! It's amazing when one is surrounded by people who appreciate the music one plays (for the most part)... and even more amazing when they recognize my original compositions, since some of the cafe frequenters also check out my YouTube/Facebook pages.
