Wish we did not have to share an island.

Nintendo is typically a family console/family centered company.
They want to make games that you can enjoy with your family.

You are supposed to cooperate with each other to design the island. It doesnt matter who progresses quicker, gets more resources, etc. Its a group effort. You can have designated areas where one person has the primary control, theres nmt islands for extra resources, you can leave gifts and help each other out whenever.... I dont see why there would be many arguments if any.

If you are arguing over this you should probably save up for a new switch or re evaluate your play style... cant play a multiplayer game thinking its single player. Compromise is important.

That's why we have world of warcraft that we play together. That is why we have sims 4 that we play together. We got the switch and animal crossing for when we are together but doing different stuff. If she is watching her shows I can play the switch. If I'm playing the playstation she can play the switch. When we are out and I am driving, she can play the switch. When we are in the store and i need to tune out because of autism i play the switch. This us why we want 2 different islands. This is not a game or activity we share. This is our time killer app. We pay for a family online plan. We should be able to have our own islands to kill time on.

I'm confused as to what you mean?? Every player can progress in the game.
The main island rep controls the progression of shop upgrades and what not but thats... it.
The other players can still terraform, move their own homes, plant flowers, place objects outdoors, collect and donate bugs/fish/fossils, upgrade their homes??? They can progress fine lol. I have separate accounts in my island for my design ideas and have been able to work from their acc fine. The only things they cant do are move villager homes and build bridges/inclines?

That's still a problem if only the Island Rep can upgrade the shops, what if they aren't playing as much as other players? It isn't a huge problem since most people co-operate but it's still an oversight that's not too uncommon with Nintendo, they're not the best at online and multiplayer play lol.

Well then I suggest buying another switch/switch lite bc animal crossing is not a single player game if theres more than one person using it lol. It's a team effort/something you're supposed to share. If you wanted a game to play on your own for distraction purposes I'd suggest botw, pokemon, splatoon, dragon quest builders, etc.

Edit: the family plan is online access not for having separate game files.

Both my brother and i have our own switches but my youngest one doesnt and he is trying to let my other brother give him a chance to play the game but that is just not gonna happen lol. He is fine with him playing any other game on his switch but he doesnt want him to touch his island and i get it. It would be nice to have an island that i built together with my other siblings but i would want to have my own seperate one too!

I mean this could always be altered but I see why they did it? Its slows progression. If you only needed to talk to Mabel 3 times to get able sisters and had 3 people on your town you'd have her in one week. If it requires everyone to talk to her 3 times it would possibly be TOO long if you have a family of 5 playing. If one person is in charge of this then it takes like.. 3 weeks.

New Leaf had four people per save file and one save file for cartridge.
The difference I think between NL and NH was that I could easily stick another cartridge into the 3DS and play on a completely different town. That's not the case in NH even though it could easily be.

I'd be 100% thinking its capitalist values if it were EA or another horrible cash-grabby sort of business.
I appreciate the sentiments but just because they're not as outright cash-grabby as EA does not mean they aren't in it for the money. They are a business, a big one too - they also have investors and stake holders to satisfy.

I get Nintendo are a family-oriented entertainment company but, at the expense of sounding kind of up-tight about it, it is absolutely intended to drive up sales of the Switch. There are multiple marketing materials clearly showing two people playing together, each with their own Switch console - there's very little demonstrating the co-op play.

Marketing talks, they don't do these things for fun; it's incredibly expensive and it's intended to sell. I think it's clear Nintendo at least want to try and push a concept of multiple Switch's per household - they want the Switch Lite to be the 3DS of this era.

Unfortunately that is not the way the game has been designed, so the only solution is to buy a second console.

I originally shared a Switch with someone else in the household. After a little while they decided they wanted it to be just their console, and they paid for it so it became theirs. I had to buy my own.

Woahh, I didn't say that's how it should work. Honestly I think it should be down to any player talking to Mabel thrice, not just the Island Rep and definitely not all of them.

You say that like it's an easy thing to do

It’s not for everyone including myself. That’s why I brought my own switch way before this game came out lol.

Can it easily be? I wouldn’t compare NH to NL because they are on two different consoles. The last AC game on a home console like switch was CF and that one had the same exact ‘one town per console’ rule as NH does. Storing save files directly on the console isn’t even new for Switch. One of the first things said about it was storing save data directly in the system memory and not the sd card,

Can it easily be?
Sure - easily in terms of what they're capable of, at least. I'm certain they'll have a way to attribute save data to a particular cartridge. Even if that's a brave feat for whatever reason, why can't they do a save profile for each potential user on a single Switch, like they do with more or less every other game on the device?

Ended up buying a new console just for my little sib because they wanted to play but neither of us wanted to share an island. Idk how anyone could think that we'd be able to share especially with the gutted experience of 2p.

The fact that they specifically made it to be one island per CONSOLE instead of per game like new leaf just proves to me that they only did it for money. They knew that it would be popular and also that many people share a switch... I would've been perfectly content with buying multiple for $60 but no. They gotta go all out with the greed 🤷

I don’t think they have a way to attribute save data on a cartridge when the switch saves to system memory. Now the one save file per profile sounds more reasonable but it’s clear why they didn’t do that. It would be like 8 AC games per $60 lol.

If you honestly cant sit down and compromise with another grown adult about where to put something in a virtual town then imo you need the experience to learn teamwork and compromise.
Kids can share things like this fine and if they argue thats?? A learning point for them??? Kids argue over EVERYTHING they have to share. This isnt some kind of kid-breaking method to make more switch sales.

It's the same as sharing a living space irl?? How do you decide what furniture goes where?? The place you live?? What flowers to put outside if you can?? Etc?

Oh but see, it's not that we CANNOT, it's that we don't want to. We already do share a living space, and compromise on everything. We are two grown adults, friends and roommate, totally independent from one another. We bought a console, and games, to be able to unwind and have fun, whether we chose to do that together or separately. The fact is, we each have our own ideas and we do not want to have to discuss and compromise every time we play this game. This is not relaxing or enjoyable to us.
So don't worry. We did sat down and compromised. Since I bought the game, and the console, I'll be the one playing it.
Now I'm the one saddened that he cannot enjoy the experience as I am enjoying it because he can't pay for a duplicate console just to play AC. I just wish we had a choice. And I am literally incapable of understanding how you can think it is not a money issue. If it was a co-op thing, we would have the option.
FORCING people to play the same save (and making all secondary characters have less freedom than the first one) is not bringing people together and trying to make an enjoyable, communal experience.

It was a pretty big bummer for me as well. I don’t have a physical person to share the island with but I do have DID. My child alter also wanted to play. Thankfully we’ve figured it out to the point where she can design her house and the area around it and we have similar taste in villagers so she isn't too bothered by the villagers around her. (Though she thinks Raymond looks like boring company who enjoys math too much xD ) But I can see it being even worse for others. And when people say you just need to work together and agree.... like, no? That isn’t the problem. Having your own island is different than helping somebody else grow theirs.

I don’t think they have a way to attribute save data on a cartridge when the switch saves to system memory.
There's no way either of us can be certain on this I think. From a technical point of view though, I don't think it's impossible!

It would be like 8 AC games per $60 lol.
This is kind of a stretch I think - I mean, it's not an issue on any other console is it? Imagine if I bought one copy of a game for PS4 but for everyone else to play it themselves, they had to buy their own PS4 and their own copy of the game. Absurd right? So why is it any different for Animal Crossing?

What makes it harder is that it's near impossible to find a Switch or Switch Lite that hasn't been jacked up in price. I planned on getting my own Switch Lite and another copy of NH so I don't have to share my island but everywhere I've looked, it's sold out with in moments. And if not that, the price has gone up. IE Switch Lite is 199. I've found it for 299 on off sites.

There's literally no logical reason I'm aware of that save files can't be attributed to profiles and that each switch profile can't have its own island. If there's somehow a tech issue with the switch not being able to handle that then fair enough but I doubt that tbh. We've seen that it's possible in other switch games. I think it's naive to say 'oh Nintendo wants us to play together as a family'. No -- Nintendo is a business that wants money, lol. Lots of people are buying their own switch and game so it's obviously working. Why do you think they made a switch lite if we're meant to play as a family? Oh wait, because more money from more people buying their own individual consoles.

Restocks do seem to be filtering back into retailers - at least for the Switch Lite. I bought a coral Switch Lite from the Nintendo UK online store yesterday after the restock. One of the North American TBT staff members managed to buy a Lite at RRP in the past couple of days too. For anyone interested in a Lite (be it for yourself, siblings, partners, etc!) definitely keep an eye on your local online retailers. :)

There are some reasons why Nintendo may have opted to save to the system storage, and not the SD card. I'm guessing it's the same reason they are hesitant to offer cloud saves. They fear people exploiting the game by making save backups, which can easily lead to duplication, among other exploits. Example: You have 100NMT, you spend all 100 and don't find Raymond. Restore save, and you now have 100NMT again.

As far as each profile getting their own save, this falls into another category from the above. Could it be sharing is more common for cultures in Eastern parts of the world? While others may be right about it, it does seem like too much of a conspiracy that they did it intentionally to sell multiple Switches to the same person. The way they've demonstrated this in the game's marketing, they intend for mom, dad, sister, and brother to all play together on the island, as if the Switch was a family owned console, and not a personal gaming device. As such, the Switch can have a profile for each family member, so rather than adding a player for your dad or mom to the island under your profile, they just use their already existing profile on the Switch to join the island.

The island sharing is working well in some situation. My son is 7 and he knows of AC through my wife since she play(ed) NL and PC. He doesn't however have enough screen time to turn in to farm enough resources to advance in the game. Given that I purchased a Switch and another copy of the game for my wife, he'll likely feel left out if unable to keep up, or just end up being frustrated in general of not having enough time to play video games whenever he wants. That's where I come in...the good news is that this game got me into AC and there's definitely a lot of family bonding due to all 3 of us having the same interest in progressing in the game.

Yes, it's not ideal but when there's lemonade... =(
