Wish we did not have to share an island.

My wife and I only own the one switch so we share an island. This means we share resources, the land, what ever we build or however we alter the landscape.

How does Nintendo expect us to not fight over island lay out or one player progressing further then another?

Nintendo is typically a family console/family centered company.
They want to make games that you can enjoy with your family.

You are supposed to cooperate with each other to design the island. It doesnt matter who progresses quicker, gets more resources, etc. Its a group effort. You can have designated areas where one person has the primary control, theres nmt islands for extra resources, you can leave gifts and help each other out whenever.... I dont see why there would be many arguments if any.

If you are arguing over this you should probably save up for a new switch or re evaluate your play style... cant play a multiplayer game thinking its single player. Compromise is important.

I understand people saying that it's a family game and you should work together...
but I completely understand you man, I'm very thankful I don't have any siblings or a girlfriend (lol) to argue with over my island. my island theme and the plans I have for it are very specific and unusual, and I'd be heartbroken to have to compromise over them.

if saving for a second switch would be possible for you, I'd definitely suggest that but I know that's not something everyone can afford (especially with ebay scalpers) so if not all I can do is offer my condolences.

perhaps try having a very formal meeting and discussion about the island layout and managing resources if getting a second switch is out of the question, that's really all I can think of to suggest lol. and mayhaps buy materials in bulk from people on this forum (if you have switch online) so you can have double of all the generic materials

Yeah I don't think Nintendo thought it through very well.
The fact that there can only be one island representative, and they get to make all the big decisions whereas other players on the island aren't granted the same input baffles me.

It's annoying because we should be able to have a choice when we start the game if we want to share an island with another player on the system or have a separate island altogether.

I'm with you on this! I understand people saying it's a family game and you should work together, but not everyone wants to play it that way and that's fine?? Some people want to play alone and be able to plan everything out and I mean, in NL and WW (I don't know a thing about CF) you only have to buy an extra cartridge to have another town, not a whole separate system. I know someone who had 8 towns because of this! I have 4 and my brother has 1. And honestly? Because of this decision I wasn't even going to buy NH period until my brother could get his own switch so we would never ever have to share, but then a good friend bought it for me and I couldn't exactly tell him to return it.

Here's my experience: the island doesn't have an infinite amount of space and I'm having to share with two people. We don't argue and I love that my dad and brother both enjoy the game, but it's just very frustrating to me that I can't do everything I wanna do because their player houses take up space and it's not up to me where they go. I wanted to have an extra character of my own, maybe even 2, but there is no way I can squeeze 4-5 player houses on here at once. I want my house to be moved where my brother's is, and obviously I can't do that. I want to get rid of Teddy (not because I don't like him! I just want a different jock in his place at this point), but he's my brother's favorite so I can't. I have to compromise on things that I wanna do and we can't afford another switch right now--if the price was only $300 for a non-lite as usual we could, but with the pandemic right now all the stores are sold out and they're in such high demand that people are charging ridiculous prices. So I have to wait it out and hold off on all sorts of things until further notice.

Sorry for the rant but basically, I completely get you on this lol and if getting another switch is out of the question for you too I wish you the best of luck!

I don't think they care haha.

At the end of the day, what Nintendo want is for you and your wife to both have a Switch or Switch Lite. I don't think it's any more complicated than that.

I could rant about it all day - they knew what they were doing and I think it's clear they didn't care about the co-op aspect of playing.

Oh man, the co-op... not to take over someone else's post with my own rants, but the couch co-op. It's so. SO so bad. I got all excited to try it out with my dad and we had him as the leader and me as the follower. It's not split screen so if I got too far behind him it made me pop into the screen where he was. I caught a fish and it went into the recycle bin because the follower can't access their inventory. I saw something in the window of Able Sisters that I wanted but I couldn't go in on my own so I asked him to take us in there, and when we got in? I. couldn't. buy. anything. anyway. I'm with you, I don't think they thought much about the co-op because they want one family to own multiple family consoles and it's so frustrating to me for so many reasons... especially since regular online multiplayer is also more flawed than I expected, but that's a rant for another day.

It's easy to say people should work together and come to agreements but that's easier said than done sometimes. Everyone has different ideas and creativities for how they'd customise the island and imo if you don't have free reign over the whole island you're pretty limited. For example, I want the island to be really natural and somewhat asia-themed while my brother would prefer a modern and built-up island. So our compromise was I paid for the game so I make the rules. Ahh, sibling love. Lol.

He's saving up for his own switch and game now instead.

Aside from that though, sharing an island is kinda boring and awkward because local multiplayer sucks. If I want to catch a fish he needs to stay still or he'll increase my chances of screwing up because I can't see my character properly. I also think it's pretty obvious this was an incentive for people in the same household to buy more than one switch.

In CF it was also only one town per console; with GC you could pretty much have as many as you wanted like the handheld games as long as you were willing to pay for extra memory carts. But I feel like NH is a special case because of just how much you can change your town compared to the other games, and I’m sure that’s causing fights among children playing this game with their siblings. At least with every game but CF you could buy an extra town for relatively cheap, but with NH people are gonna either have to learn to play together or fork out the extra cash for a new town.

OH PLEASE. Anyone saying Nintendo did this solely because it's a family game and meant to be enjoyed together is 100% fooled.
Welcome to capitalism, buddy. Whether you think highly of Nintendo of not, this decision was made to increase their Switches sales.

And I agree, this sucks. I have a roommate, we both have our own saves on every other game, play together AND separately. Doesn't work for AC unless he agrees to be a secondary character on my island or spend another 3rd of his monthly pay on a console we already have. Yay.

Ah that's right, I remember that now! I have the gamecube game but only got into it--and WW--after NL so my family never got into it to the extent that they're into NH, and for my dad specifically this is his first game lol. And I agree, NL has a lot of town customization too but NH expanded on that a ton with terraforming and outdoor decoration and freely moving buildings and I don't doubt that kids are having fights. My brother is almost 19 and my dad and I are adults (yes I'm 23, don't ask why I live at home with them but I do lol) so we're mature enough not to fight over it and it really helps that they're also basically like "I don't care what the island looks like, I just wanna decorate my own house and fish" so I'm relatively lucky lol. Especially since under more normal circumstances we'd be able to buy another switch. But I feel bad for people like OP who can't, and for kids who have to share with siblings as you mentioned!

Thats like sharing a Pokemon save file like wtf
You just can't do it.
I mean you can but you don't want to because you want to progress on your own & have something of your own.
Since we're bringing Pokemon into this, then what's worse is the fact that Sword & Shield mark the first time you can have multiple save files without having to buy another copy--each profile can have their own and because of this I have two separate save files and my 2 family members both have one. And yet in ACNH you have to share... I agree with someone further up in the replies who said you should be able to choose between sharing with another player on the system or starting your own.

Nintendos entire thing is family. I'd be 100% thinking its capitalist values if it were EA or another horrible cash-grabby sort of business. But its... their entire core for the company. The choice to have everyone on an island was likely not linked to switch sales I mean... who would buy an extra console just for ONE game? That's ridiculous to expect from people.

If you honestly cant sit down and compromise with another grown adult about where to put something in a virtual town then imo you need the experience to learn teamwork and compromise.
Kids can share things like this fine and if they argue thats?? A learning point for them??? Kids argue over EVERYTHING they have to share. This isnt some kind of kid-breaking method to make more switch sales.
I shared my CF town with my sister and brother with no issue.
My sister and I shared a WW town for a while too before my parents got my sister her own.
Like... it isnt hard if you communicate and learn to work with one another.

It's the same as sharing a living space irl?? How do you decide what furniture goes where?? The place you live?? What flowers to put outside if you can?? Etc?

I’m 23 and still live at home so no judgment here. ;)

yeah my brother and I shared a GC town and briefly a WW town when the game first launched, before my parents got me my own DS, and the GC town was actually fine, but I feel like having to share a house in WW may eventually have led to some arguments down the line. But yeah with times the way they are a lot of people can’t afford a new Switch and game, and even if you can could be hard to find a new one, so a lot of people are stuck for right now.

Sharing a town isn’t a greedy new concept Nintendo came up with just for New Horizons. It was a thing in previous games. New Leaf had four people per save file and one save file for cartridge.

NH is one town per console like CF. If you don’t want to share than buy another switch.

This decision could be made with or without capitalism

I don’t disagree about kids learning to cooperate being a good thing, but I also don’t think it didn’t cross Nintendo’s mind that this might be a good way to sell more Switches. Hopefully the couch co-op and village rep duties or whatever they are next game can be implemented in a better way.

Co-operation doesn't mean only one player progresses. That's entirely unfair on other players and I doubt its just Nintendo pushing a multiplayer style, they're getting more greedy so it's probably a means of selling more Switches.

You say that like it's an easy thing to do

I'm confused as to what you mean?? Every player can progress in the game.
The main island rep controls the progression of shop upgrades and what not but thats... it.
The other players can still terraform, move their own homes, plant flowers, place objects outdoors, collect and donate bugs/fish/fossils, upgrade their homes??? They can progress fine lol. I have separate accounts in my island for my design ideas and have been able to work from their acc fine. The only things they cant do are move villager homes and build bridges/inclines?
