Macs don't get viruses due to the different file types each OS uses. Most virues(that being roughly 99% of them) are targeted at Windows-based filetypes, thus not affecting Macs. That being said, I've used Windows for years and never gotten a virus. I personally would choose PC over Mac. I didn't like the interface of Macs when I tried one and everything was too...not right for me.
Plus you can get a PC with like double the specs for cheaper, which just helps yours run better in the long run.

I choose mac, but bith OSs have pros and cons.
My old PC made me want to take it out back and shoot it, then bury it next to old yeller.

OK, so here is my situation. I own a PC, and my family owns a MAC. I use both computers evenly, and overall I would buy the PC. The MAC is not as highly used as the PC, so that means some programs that are downloadable online for PC would have to be reformatted so that they may also be compatible with the MAC. The same goes for updates. Once a PC update is realeased, the update must then be reformatted for the MAC. Since updates are common on programs like AIM, Xfire, Yahoo Messenger, and MSN messenger a MAC would be at a little bit of a disadvantage when it comes to online updating. I would recommend the PC if you are also into gaming and stuff like Microsoft Word and Powerpoint.
The only applications I use are GIMP (an imaging software), YIM, and Microsoft Word, and I can use OpenOffice (which is pretty much an exact, freeware copy of Microsoft Office) on Mac. So yeah I shouldn't have any problems. Plus I'll be keeping my regular PC, I'm just buying a mac laptop, so if there's anything I need a PC for I'll still have it...if I ever get around to getting it repaired, anyway. So yeah I've decided to go with a macbook. The extra money seems worth it to get rid of all the frustration that comes with owning a PC. Thanks for your help everyone.

Since you don't plan on playing high intensity games, I'd get a mac. The photo booth and the new iLife suite will keep you busy for hours on end.

Building anything yourself is cheaper, if you know what you're doing.
The fact is that Windows, Mac OS, and Linux have their pros and cons. Mac OS is good for basic users and general editing, Windows is more business, and Linux is well... free.
If you can't do something on the Mac OS use Boot Camp, Parallel, or VM Ware. Run all 3 OS's at the same time.
BTW, you can get a Mac Mini with ok specs
