I?m curious, I?m hoping that our characters will still be the mayor of the town and so we get to customise everything, but I?m worried it won?t happen. What does everyone think?

I think so. It feels like something that has become sort of synonymous with the series just due to the popularity of New Leaf even beyond those who were already fans of the series. I'm totally on board with it and am surprised at the number of people who don't want to be mayor again. For that reason I hope it'll be an optional thing! There might be several advantages and disadvantages to being the mayor versus being a villager this time around, and I think it would make for some really varied playthroughs. What's interesting to me though is that in all media outside NL, the main character is always referred to as 'villager'. Well, we'll have to wait and see, but I think we'll at least be in the same position of power we were in in NL, whether we're called mayor or not, or at least be able to choose it as an option :)

This is the thing I’m most curious to learn about. If I were a betting man, I’d say that we for sure will be the mayor, but you never know. Regardless of whether or not we are the mayor, I imagine we will still have some control over how our town is designed with PWPs and such.

To be honest, I don't care if the player is again the mayor or some NPC. As long as you still have
the possibility to build PWPs and so on then I'm ok with it.

If the player is however again the mayor then I hope we can do more this time, like making our own
event(s), have more freedom when it comes to building PWPs and making decisions in general etc.
But more importantly... As the mayor, you should finally get the power to give Isabelle a day off.

If so then I hope the rest of players can do more than just be a normal villager, but it'd be fine anyway.

I've started thinking "What if Isabelle was the next mayor?". Maybe the main player gets to be her secretary and she asks him/her for advice which would mean we still customize the town? It's just an idea.

Yes. Isabelle in the teaser of the last Nintendo Direct, referred to the player as the mayor. That's about the only thing we can be sure of for the Nintendo Switch Animal Crossing game.

I was going to mention this myself but I actually think that was more of a reference to New Leaf since it's the current game, and therefore referred to the current mayor and what they are up to, and Isabelle's part of the trailer wasn't about AC but just Smash. The Nook portion didn't mention the mayor at all.

Happy Home Designer 2? Just saying. But I know its going to be a main series game, and we know nothing about the game yet, the reveal trailer doesn’t give any hints to anything, the only hint I see is that the Happy Home Designer spinoff game might get a sequel, or 3.0 update from the actual game.

At the same time however, she said "Maybe I should be the mayor instead", meaning that
she thought about being the mayor which can be seen as maybe a hint that Isabelle could
be a candidate as the new mayor in the Switch game. Then again, the whole trailer was more
about Smash then AC Switch and like smonikkims mentioned the whole thing could also been
just a reference to New Leaf.

It could also be that the player gets a completely new role in the game which is even more
important then being the mayor, meaning that Isabelle becomes in fact the new mayor and
the player works together with her again. Or Isabelle could become the vice mayor, like you
(the player) are the mayor again and gives Isabelle a promotion for her good job she has done
in the past years.

It'd be kinda awesome if Isabelle and the player were on the exact same level as mayor or she was a really important deputy. Since she already says in New Leaf that she runs the town if you are away for a long time.

I was thinking that for all those who don't want full customisation, they could hand over to Isabelle who could suggest and decide where PWPs go and the like, or you could take full control yourself. Completely able to play the game either way.

What if this time we can choose to be mayor or to leave the place to some villager? Or even better: we are mayor but we got to choose a helper between our favorite villagers!
And Isabelle? Well she could still work someplace in the town. It would be interesting if, based on what type of villager we chose as vice mayor, we could have different style of pwp in the town. If they add more villager personality it would be even more interesting to play with this option!
So let’s say if our helper is a lazy villager, there would be some specific town shops, pwp, and other amenities.
Anyways, I just hope we are still mayors but that we have a lot more possibilities to make the mayor job more various and cool!

I think we should just keep climbing the ranks of government, and be elected to higher and higher positions of power.

Mayor - next, Governor, President...WORLD LEADER SUPREME.

I liked being mayor as I thought it was a nice feature, so I hope they keep it. Though some days I miss how Tortimer was the mayor instead.

I kinda hope not, but instead we be the assistant to Isabelle, a now fledgling mayor whom constantly asks us for advice, I.E. helping her decide where new villagers get to place their house, PWP locations, etc.

So the mayor, but not the mayor.

I honestly think it wouldn't be a smart move to take our position away. If they did, it would really have to be great lol. Like "king/queen". If anything, we should have more options as mayor; ie deciding where villagers live (without plot resetting), deciding who/when someone leaves (maybe in a friendlier sense), etc. I'm pretty excited - or anxious - to see what they have planned.

That's a genius idea. I never liked being referred to as mayor in New Leaf; especially as how it was such a stretch to make the player a mayor in the first place! It makes much more sense to give the player the role of secretary and just have you guide her to do your previous mayoral features. Plus I was always annoyed by how Isabelle would demand that you take a break. I don't want to! Let me build a PWP on Explorer's Day! Now they'd be able to sidestep that issue by just having her enjoy her day off on her own. Who'd want to overwork poor Isabelle?

It could make for some great character development, too. Imagine if she came up to the player in a panic because some villager caused trouble! It'd be so fun to help her out.

I really like Blue Cup's idea 'cause it sounds very canon :) or having to build your way up to becoming a mayor

I wouldn't mind if our character stays the mayor. The only thing that bothered me about the mayor system was the inability of side characters to get pings for projects and their lack of being able to place projects/pass ordinances. So maybe if they found a way to let side characters do stuff too, I'd be more happy about the mayor system.
