Why don't my villagers ever talk to each other?

I've been playing for over a year and in that entire span of time have only seen my villagers have a conversation like twice, why is this? Most of the time they will just keep walking into each other until the other one moves out of the way, without saying a word or even acknowledging each others' presence, which is annoying. There will be even some cases where I've watched them do this for at least 30 seconds, then as SOON as I walk away, I can hear them making the little "emotion" noises off screen. Why don't they ever have a "conversation" when I'm on screen or in the same area? Is this a glitch or something? And has it happened to anyone else?

You have to be fast to catch their conversations, run up to them and press A. Also my villagers rarely talk to each other as well, it is just very rare in New Leaf. In Wild World they had conversations all the time.

It's just such a shame! One of my favorite things about Wild World/City Folk was watching the animals talk to each other and have an argument or celebration, it was so funny! And it seemed to happen almost every time they crossed paths with each other! Now? Nothing!

I never knew they could have conversations
My villages just walk into each other for every town I've had and it was just a few days ago that I saw two villagers talk to each other

Awe ik... the best ones tho were when the ones with the lazy personality talk about their food problems

That's what mine do, they just keep walking in to each other until one gets pushed out of the way or they start walking in a different direction. You'd think they would be forced to have a conversation at some point! Haha. Every time I've ever bumped into anyone I've always said "sorry", or "excuse me". Ah, video game logic.

Try trapping several of your villagers together in a small area like this:

I trapped my cycling town villagers on a bridge and they started having multiple conversations. They also started exchanging clothing so be aware of that.If you don't want to do that, then just follow your villagers around. My villagers tend to interact more after I've talked to them all and have started doing other things.

Lmao, I can't believe I've never tried that. Seems like the logical thing to do. I'd better get trapping! Thanks. c:

they're talking behind your back

idk, I find some strange hilarity and seeing 2 villagers just keep walking into each other and nothing else

ahaha, yes, my first instinct was to assume this because they seemed to have no problem talking when I wasn't around. BETTER REMEMBER WHO'S THE MAYOR HERE, GUYS!
even though I was never elected or anything, just kinda showed up and took charge..

I hate how they almost never interact, it's really rare, but when it happens I'm always amused.

It's a very rare occurrence. You have the option to trap them together in an area or you could push them towards each other. Usually you'll often miss the conversation. Whenever I see my villagers beside one another I usually tend to race over and press A only to find they weren't talking at all aha.

I hate it when they talk and I'm not around to get into the conversation fast enough cus they have a chance of copying each other's clothes or catchphrases when they do that and I like to keep them original fml

I love their conversations though c:
