Why does it matter?

Yes! Calm and civil discussion can be very fun and instructive. In that sense I don't mind comparing villagers, personality types, or design, either. That would actually be fun.

I am curious why some people really like a design that some other people do not. I like the insight.

Exactly. I actually hate it when I try to dicuss about something with someone and they're all like TIS MY OPINION! OMG LEAVE MY POOR LITTLE OPINION ALONE I HAVE MINE U HAVE YOURS K?????

O_O as if talking about it at all is a personal attack...

Here, I'll give a nice little example. Wreck-It Ralph and Frozen are my favorite movies of all time.

Am I going to hiss and spit at people who dislike those movies? Maybe internally, but I wouldn't be inflammatory to them straight on unless they were towards me first about it.

Can I have a normal conversation with them as to why I like it and why they don't? Of course! We can discuss flaws and all of that fun stuff, I don't mind at all!

Will I force my agenda/opinion on them? No, not as long as they've seen both and can thoroughly analyze them in a mature manner.

And there you have it. Same thing with villagers. But it's never calm and mature with villagers. So best not to do it at all.

I sense drama coming ahead...
Once I see a single post that may cause drama, I'll request to close the thread. I just had to rant... Everything seems fine right now, though. It's common sense to respect other people's opinions.

I will say this; sometimes, when you feel very passionate about something, you're quick to assume people are harping on you for liking it if they say something in a way that wasn't entirely how they meant it, if you know what I mean?
For example, if someone were to hear me state that my favorite movie is WiR, snort and laugh and say it was terrible, I would be offended because they approached the situation wrong. It's partially about approach, and partially about how both parties handle it.

Passion can be blinding, we should try to remember that.

I saw Frozen and told my friend about it and she yelled at me for "supporting such a crappy movie". She hates it because apparently Disney was "lazy" for recycling the Rapunzel character models. That's really the only argument she had against the movie... It made me feel terrible because she kept harping on me about supporting the movie, when in reality, I loved it. :I

And that is an example of someone who's taking it too far and forcing their agenda on you. She's being hostile and inflammatory and yet she has very little evidence to back herself up.

Now, with villagers, it IS a little different because it really really REALLY is perfectly strapped to opinion. There isn't much to argue over, like, in terms of "flaws"? So it's even worse to argue about villagers when it's aligned precisely with opinion.

For some reason, when somebody else likes/does what I do, I get irritated. It's childish and immature, but it's me. cx
I can love all villagers, it's just some are more appealing to me then others. I wish people would just see the light and appreciate villagers for what they are, and not what they look like.

I think it's so ridiculous. I personally do not like Marshal (He ruined my perfect pears, man!) but that doesn't mean I get upset when someone else wants him. Same with any other villager. Telling someone they aren't allowed to like who they like is so stupid. It's a video game, guys. It's not your town, so why do you care??

Yeah man! I don't like Frozen for a few reasons but I can totally see why other people like it!
I don't much care for Julian the smug unicorn (honestly I just don't really like unicorns xD) either but I can definitely see why he's so popular.
It would be cool to have constructive discussions about design and talking about why people like something or why they don't (especially in the context of character design/appearance, that's so interesting to me!), but I think it would be really difficult to do that here without it becoming extremely inflammatory.

Exactly. That's precisely what I was going for. c: But, I think as a general rule, even with other things, it's difficult for discussions not to become inflammatory unless all parties are chill and taking deep breaths and not focusing on the "bad" or "attacking" aspects of it -- because it's not an attack in a discussion like that, but some of us have self esteem issues that tell us it is so. So we have to be aware of ourselves and our feelings. But again, I don't think it's necessarily possible here. I can even see the stickied thread going to hell all the way to the bottom layer based on that principle.

Opinions are funny. They're truly odd things, and cause so many arguments and upsets, ahah. But we all have them. So it's, again, a matter of dealing with them correctly.

If someone wants to know why something's so popular, that's fine. If anybody's actually annoyed at people who even MIGHT just dislike it because they want to be '~original~', then just answer their question normally instead of just making everything worse and asking them why they want to know. Nobody's going to be able to answer that.

Because wanting to know that is a perfectly normal thing to wonder, and it would annoy someone who just made that post for the sake of starting that kind of argument because they got their answer, and there's nothing to be controversial about anymore. Plus the added benefit of being able to tell whether they honestly wanted to know or not.

It's different about villagers because unlike things like 'why is blue such a popular color' villager designs are much more complex and unique. It's often not JUST an opinion. Such as the thing that Marshal is attractive to most girls who play the game because he looks like a cute little boy, Julian is popular because he's a pastel-colored unicorn which you don't find in most male villagers (plus he's a unicorn and lots of people love unicorns), and Rosie has made a huge appearance in one of the Animal Crossing movies. I mean I personally find Rosie kind of creepy, but I've never watched the movies and I think peppy villagers are usually annoying so there's my own reason.

Hahahaha I wonder how many people can't guess who this is. There's actually a few of them here, but one is so very prominent on this subforum. And to clarify I'm not trying to shame anyone here, but this repetitive behavior is so very draining and got old very quickly.

I much prefer the trolls on the MMOC boards, at least they're creative while being inflammatory.

Just got back from doing laundry...you caught me! Ha ha! I do think we all know who I am referring to, but the example was just too good to pass up to make a point. Oh, and said person is apparently ignoring this thread, thankfully. *whew* I was a bit worried.

Um...what are the MMOC boards? I'm old and out of touch... heh...

It reminded me of that thread I commented on that morning. (Not going to imply who because let's keep the drama to the soap operas)
She was asking why ______ is underrated and Marshal is popular because he is cute. And only cute villagers are 'allowed' to be popular. People told her that it is a MATTER of OPINION. But the person was so stubborn that I had to request to close the thread. It is better to keep your opinions to yourself rather than making a thread and be stubborn l. I seriously do not get those type of people. It's like they can't accept the facts,or they cannot process such words like "opinion".
