When villagers are being bought/sold I always see "they're original" or "are they original"? Does original mean they've only belonged to that person? Why do people care?
Why do people want original villagers?

to answer your question - some people care, some don't. I just like making sure any villagers I get don't have houses full of fish/bugs and fossils Lol. It makes it really ugly. and some villagers shirts suit them like Fauna, Merengue, for example. If they were wearing any other kind of shirt it'd look ugly IMO.
Original just means the villager has the same shirt, catchphrase, furniture layout in their home, etc. as what you get when you first encounter them. As Alexi said, a lot of people dislike it when they have fossils, bugs, or trashy furniture in their homes, or if they are wearing an ugly shirt. It's difficult if not impossible to change these things back to original, or just change them to something better, which is why they're worth a lot more as original depending on the villager.
If they're looking to sell the villager.. if the villager is kept original it goes for a higher price and easier to sell
And I like to keep my villagers interior original not cause I want to sell them but I think their original interior is pretty. It's all based on personal preference

I was wondering about that, too.
So, it sounds like a hard thing to do because you would basically have to deny all of their requests to get them something or sell an item to them, right? Doesn't that affect whether they're friends with you? And can't the villagers give each other furniture, or no? I've definitely seen them give clothes to each other and change on the spot.
I get why a nicer home interior would matter (I didn't know that transferred over to their new town), but I don't see why the catchphrase would matter, since you can change that easily.
I'm pretty new to acnl, so maybe these are all just dumb questions. If that is the case, my apologies.
