Why did these bushes die?

My assumption was that 1 tile of space is needed between a house/building and where you want to plant the tree/bush/bamboo, which I believe I did; still, all four of them wilted the next day.

(bad photo, but holes are where they were planted; clovers weren't originally there if that would affect it)

Were they too close to the cliff? (there's 1 tile of space buffer around them all) Does that need more space? I've planted bushes in rows that close to the cliffs before, but they grew fine.
Just dead spots, maybe?

I probably did something obviously wrong but I'm really baffled rn

The two closest to the door probably wilted because they're next to your doorway, which counts like you're planting them next to your house. Not sure about the other two, but the picture might be missing something out.

Also, to get a better quality photo, post a screenshot to miiverse and then log into miiverse on your PC.

it has to be two in the front of a house.
