Hi all,

I've never played a pokemon game before, but I have passing familiarity with the game through Smash and other nintendo games.

I have considered trying pokemon, but I don't know which game is best for a beginner. Which one would you suggest? I have a 3DS XL and a DS lite, so I can play any pokemon title going back to the game boy advance.

Thanks in advance!

I would suggest Emerald Version or either of the two X or Y. Although X or Y are probably better to choose since they can connect to the internet for the full experience of playing with other people, and it's only a step down from the newest versions, Alpha Sapphire and Omega Ruby -- so it is very helpful in explaining the way the game works as you go. It's my personal favorite version set as well, what with the introduction of trainer customization and the pretty scenery in it, I think any new Pok?mon player would definitely like it!

Either Black/White because the story and one key character - N - are awesome or XY because you have a chance of completing your pokedex with the internet connection and the still active players. And because the graphics are truly a new innovation compared to previous games. edit/ also because it adds more individuality but the story really sucks imo.

I would suggest Pokemon X/Y. I found it to be the easiest Pokemon game I've ever played.

bw for plot and gameplay (b2w2 possibly as well, plot isnt as strong but its still much better than most pokemon plots imo). also probably has the best postgames of any pokemon to date

oras for modern benefits

emerald for old-school but still solid (also best battle frontier imo)

any gen1-2 are fine, if you want to check them out. they're super archaic in tons of ways, but have their own strange charm (especially gen1 with how much you can abuse its programming+quality sprites)

Because of the nature of the games you can really start with any. They're all good,
But I think that if you're new to the games that starting with the latest is always the best, as each set of games they release introduces more Pokemon. So either X/Y or Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire. Also while you might find the single player mode really easy, be aware that you're going to have to be prepared to lose a lot if you want to battle competitively, haha.

I would have recommended the two first Generations as they were the best imo, but from those, Gen III aka. R/S/E. They aren't the best but better than the DS ones imo.

I'd say that Pokemon X and Y would be the best to start with, as you don't need to grind because of the Exp. Share.

Yeah, probably X&Y. I would've said ORAS, but there's only like 3 Kalos Pokemon in those games to be obtained without trading, so it's kinda like you're missing out on an entire generation.
X&Y is pretty easy as it, and as mentioned above, the EXP Share makes it easier.

I really wouldn't play a game pre-Gen 6, honestly, I don't think it's worth it. That's just my 2 cents, tho.

I agree, go with Pokemon X or Y if you want something recent and charming. Otherwise, Soulsilver or Heartgold. 16 gyms instead of 8, and tons of content. c:

Wow, thank you all for the thoughtful replies!

I think Pokemon X should be my first game. As a side note though, I coincidentally was able to pick up demo codes for alpha sapphire/omega ruby yesterday, so I may try those out first before buying a game. I've never tried a demo for any game before, so it'll be a new learning experience on multiple fronts!

XY's story was dreadful

so were the cities and characters

Personally I would say ORAS, as you get the "best" Pokemon experience, with the majority of downloadable Pokemon being available on there. Plus, I personally like the Hoenn region and its legendaries a lot more than the Kalos region. I wasn't really a big fan of X/Y, it was nice seeing a completely new region, but it felt quite an empty experience if I'm perfectly honest compared to most of the previous Pokemon games.

If you want a somewhat newer game, pick up Pokemon X/Y. It's one of the best games in the entire series, in my opinion. Pokemon is getting on the right track again. If you want to understand older players more, try to find Pokemon LeafGreen or FireRed. It's the GBA remake of the first games of the entire series with the original 151 Pokemon. Both are definitely worth your time and money.

pokemon fire red/leaf green! the games are really fun, addicting and look beautiful to this day and are great to start the franchise in my opinion because they're remakes and much better versions of the the first games in the series (red&blue)

the quotations being the operative punctuation here
I agree with the rest of the comment, though.

I'd say grab a copy of Red, Blue, Green or Yellow, and then get a copy of GSC. It's a great introduction to the game, and if you start at XY or one of the more graphically updated and feature-packed ones then you think the older ones are boring, and you'd have missed out on a great thing.

You should totally get Pokemon Emerald, it is so fun, and Hoenn is the best region. :)
