After noticing about 25% of the community here has played Mother 3, I figured this would be the right place to ask.

I have been getting the itch to play Mother 3 since starting EarthBound a few months back. I want to play, but I have no idea how. I've been trying to avoid emulators at all costs due to wanting to play on an actual Game Boy Advance and because I haven't ever had to best of luck with getting the English translation patch from Starmen.net to work. My only guess for how I'd like to play is to have the ROM with the English patch dumped onto a GBA cart.

Any suggestions?

Emulators are the only way to play it in English, and it's going to be tough to play if you don't know japanese.
If you REALLY don't want to use emulators, then you can import a copy from Japan. I think they're about $60.

I've heard of some people buying a sports game, dumping the ROM, and putting other games on that cart. This is how I could see having an English Mother 3 GBA cart.

Emulator is probably your best bet, unless you're looking to do something really complicated and likely pricey. I used Visual Boy Advance and the Mother 3 fan translation from the official site for the translation. Worked like a charm. A little messing with the options and you can do the combos just as seamlessly as you might with a controller in your hand. (Granted, I actually DID use a controller in my hand by way of a plugin through USB, so I was technically playing it with a playstation controller. lol)

Yep, my Brother has an english copy of Mother 3 on cart because of that.

I'd recommend the English GBA cart for a more authentic experience. I finished it on a Wii emulator just over 3 years ago. I wouldn't play it unless you want to cry.

I have decided that I might try on emulator as I can't confirm that the GBA carts of Mother 3 w/ English I've seen are a good thing to go with. Any tips on where to get Visual Boy Advance?

Google is your friend. That's honestly how I found it. But if you really need a direct link, the Mother 3 fan translation site does all the work of finding the downloads for you: http://mother3.fobby.net/

All current patches are unusable on a cartridge. Multiple groups have tried to change that, but none of them have succeeded.

I'm not sure if I understand you correctly, but I was indeed able to play Mother 3 (with the English translation patch) on my GBA SP by use of an M3 cart. I was glad it worked because it was so much more comfortable than with an emulator.

I'm not sure if this kind of talk is allowed here though?

I heard they were releasing it in the eShop but yeah I emulate it. Thank you, Starmen.net for translating it and allowing me to experience vigorous crying

I find this reeeeeeeeeeally hard to believe, as Reggie even likes to make fun of desperate Mother 3 fans (*coughNintendoPresentationatE3thisyear*) who have been waiting forever for it to be properly released/remade for 3DS... basically any bone that Nintendo would throw, which was been zippo.

So... I'm seconding the above. Do you have a source for this? If they did release it, I imagine it would be Japan only.

I remember Reggie making fun of that I was depressed for ages.. But tbh if Nintendo didn't care about the series they wouldnt even talk about it so I think we may end up with a translation EVENTUALLY. But for now if anyone wants to play it emulate it.

I'm not sure. I heard that Nintendo even turned down the offered fan translation work of Mother 3, which the Mother 3 translation team offered to them for free---every last bit of it, even if they just wanted to use it as reference for a possible future translation of the game to release.

I think Nintendo of America is probably afraid of getting backlash from parents of Nintendo game players, who may or may not agree with some of the themes in the game, as some of them ARE a bit questionable (like how Lucas learns his psychic powers, for example, which I'm sure that 95% of the people who played it saw that the wrong way). And then America's whole issue and controversy with transgenders and the like (the Magypsies, even though they're named a genderless). You'd think they could just slap a more mature rating on it and that would be okay, but I don't think they're willing to take the risk, no matter how many fans have been asking for it.

That's just my theory, though.

As for Reggie making fun of the fans... that really was a low-blow. I felt more like he was trying to tell fans to basically stop asking about it because it wasn't going to happen.
