Where does animal crossing save?

Hi everyone!
I was just wondering where animal crossing new leaf got saved, is it the SD card or the game cartridge?

One of my 3DS' doesn't have an SD card in it and has the physical copy of the game, so that's where it saves. My other 3DS has the digital copy and an SD card, so I guess it depends on whether you have a physical or digital copy.

I have the physical copy and an SD card

If you have a physical copy it saves to the cartridge.
If you have a digital copy, it'll save to the SD card.
