i'm currently blanking out on what to do with my houses in my two new saves, let alone what to do with my house in new horizons. so this begs the question: where does everyone get their design inspiration from? dream towns? villager houses? things in real life? do you start with one piece of furniture/set and work from there or start with a concept then expand from there? i wish for answers!
I usually just start with the furniture that I like the most. I put it in a room, add pieces as I get them, and arrange them so they look nice and everything is accessible. It can start with a set, but it doesn't have to. It could just be random items. As I'm adding to the rooms, I sort of see which colors are working well together, if I have a theme emerging, and go from there.
It also helps if you decide on a purpose for the room. Like the main room can be a sitting room, the upstairs a bedroom and so forth.
I usually get my inspiration from looking at other player's town, be it through online blogs or visiting Dream Towns. If I see something I really like and want to have in my town, too, then I try to replicate the theme - adding a few of my own touches. But if I see nothing that really grabs my attention, at moment, then I try to replicate towns or hotels from other video games I've played like Mario RPG, Final Fantasy, Phantasy Star, Zelda, Stardew Valley ect.
I go with my gut and pick a theme. I've finally decided on a house design that I'm satisfied with.
I used to look up inspiration from other people's houses in dream addresses or Pinterest images. If I didn't do that, I'd flow with furniture sets and knick-knacks that I liked. With practice, I eventually had a room I loved. It just took some time.
for new leaf, i would sometimes visit dream towns to try and gain some inspiration. but since i never wanted to feel like i was copying someone else’s idea, i mainly created rooms with items that i enjoyed and hoped that it would look good lol
For me I would be inspired by individual furniture items in the game and then kind of craft a theme around that.
For example, in new leaf I really like the mermaid items and gulliver items, so I made my mayor's story a "secret mermaid who collected a bunch of artifacts from the bottom of the ocean and her travels all over the world" and filled her house with such items. In addition, I also liked some of the cutesy items like the froggy chair, pastel kids series, and items like that and incorporated that into my second character's story and house, and so on.
Mostly Pinterest and twitter honestly, everyone there has such cute cottagecore villages! Plus I spend a lot of time on AC twitter looking for dress designs
