I like going island hopping, not just for villagers but also for resources. I'm a walking ecological disaster that completely depletes the resources of any mystery island I encounter.
During those trips, I noticed that at certain points I've just looked at an island and wanted to go home again. Perhaps these mystery islands are evolving a defense against resource depletion? Anyway, on my last few island hopping sprees I noticed a few islands I hadn't seen before. The first one was great, filled to the brim with trees and even had more than 4 palm trees on the beaches.
The other made me weep with despair: It was in no shape or form a suitable island to quickly plunder. It was three tiered, it had a river starting at the top of the cliff and then flowing down like hot chocolate of a layered cake, dividing the island into all sorts of tiny parts separated by river and cliffs. A lot of climbing and pole-vaulting later I did succeed in depleting all resources, but it took me a lot more time than an 'usual' island.
I really like mystery islands that are flat or almost flat, that require little climing and pole vaulting to get everywhere. The curly river island is my favorite, just chop all the trees while working to the inside, then switch to a shovel and work your way back to the dock, it's so quick and easy. I also love the sister fruit island since I don't have to worry about checking for the wasp before starting to chop down trees.
Do you have a favorite mystery island, and if so, why is that your favorite?
