What's on the menu?

First of all, I just want to say a warm hello to everyone.

I've noticed a few people bring up whether cooking is going to be a feature in New Horizons, and I'm curious to note that perhaps the icon below (of a mug) could hint at a specific menu for food-related items. Thoughts?

I mean, there are a few food-related items scattered around the trailers already (and I haven't played Animal Crossing in years, so correct me if I'm wrong), but are mugs of tea and/or coffee available to drink early on in the game? If not, do you think they'll be craftable in New Horizons?

Tools, Furniture, Furniture Accessories (things that sit on tables/desks, etc), hangable furniture, wallpaper/carpet, nature-based wearables (?), wearable bags as seen in trailer, not sure, favorited.

That is my guess. I’m excited to see what all could show up though!

Hopefully the mug is an indication that there will be some kind of cooking involved in Horizon, but I highly doubt that'll happen. Not anytime soon. In New Leaf, you have the option for coffee takeouts, once you've unlocked Brewster's, but that doesn't happen early in the game. Eitherway, I don't think that mug icon is for that use. But there's always a maybe.

Lol, imagine making a dish on a crafting table with a hammer. That’d be pretty funny.

There is a lot of food furniture in NL but they aren’t edible. I don’t think they’ll have us cooking in NH, though.
Buy hopefully we’ll have more to consume in this game beyond fruit, candy, ice cream, cake, sushi rolls, coffee, and sparkling cider. Not a very balanced diet.

Wait.. we can eat sushi rolls? :o

Yup, it’s a Japanese exclusive item, forgot what Holiday you get it on.

Lol, I’d give you one but I only have one left and I’m not giving it away.

Man, I don't understand everyone's desire to cook in video games. I love to cook in real life, but I hate to do it in games. I've played Stardew Valley a billion times and you really ought to cook in that game if you want to get deep into the mines, but I don't even do it then (we die like men)! I couldn't imagine doing it in animal crossing where eating serves no purpose other than to look cute.

A lot of features in Animal Crossing are just there to look cute, but they are big selling features of the game. I don't feel the desire to have cooking the game either (unless it gave buffs somehow, like increased luck, faster running, or faster tool use), but I can see why others would.

This is my best guess so far: it makes sense to want in-game ?life? to reflect reality, and the finding/eating of food is a huge part of our reality. Who knows, maybe being alive and consuming food are so subconsciously linked that we find a game?s reality more believable, and therefore immersive, if it includes those aspects.

I guess. It just seems annoying and time consuming to me. I could be using those resources to collect stuff and get moneyyyyyy. I am kind of a hoarder in video games, lol.

This is what I got from the menu pictures.

Tool items: Items that are used to tasks, like net, shovel, fishing rod, axe, etc.

Furniture Items: Items like tables, beds, chairs, couches, TV, etc.

Miscellaneous items: Items like kitchenware, and food items like fruit basket, turkey, cup of coffee, plated meals, etc.

Wall Items: Items like portraits, paintings, taxidermy, etc.

Wallpaper/Flooring: Items like Patterns or solid colour wall skins, or different material flooring.

Garden Items: Items involving plants like vase of flowers, potted plants, leaf umbrella.

Storage Items: Items that can store things, like chests, bags, etc.

Craftable items: In the trailers it looks like any item that has a hammer means that all resources needed to make the item have been collected and the item is ready to be crafted. I believe going to this menu filter out the items that you still don't have all the resources to create.

Favourite/Wishlist Items: These are the item you mark as favourites or wanted.

I do not believe this menu would have clothing items as this is the work bench. Clothing items I believe will be found somewhere else, at a sewing machine or something where clothing can also be purchased IMO.

I do not think the food items will be cookable. They will be crafted like all other items IMO.

This is probably where all the food-based item recipes are stored. No idea what kind of materials you'd use to make them with, though. Fish and fruit, the only items that would make sense for this, aren't really going to make a lot of recipes. I doubt that there's going to be a cooking option, though it would be really cool.

Just a guess, but maybe there are people out there who love to cook in video games but hate it in real
life for some reasons? Or it's just a nice gimmick people enjoy a lot. For me it is such a gimmick I enjoy
and sometimes, it also helps you, like in Breath of the Wild for example, you can cook meals and also
medicine that have depending of what you used a different effect on you. Such a cooking feature would
probably fit into Animal Crossing since it is kinda a game based on real life taking place in a fantasy world
however.

I couldn't agree more with this insight.

That makes the most sense now that I reflect on the game's ecosystem.

This is a great speculative list so far. You've probably hit the nail on the head in that last part too.

It would be nice to have a cooking option, but it depends. Some games I've played before take a long time to cook food in and that can be really time consuming. Not to mention having to gather up all the materials just to cook can be really time consuming as well. Though it was pretty fun doing it and I love both cooking in real life and in games, but I imagine the food icon you saw was just the food furniture that you can craft and place anywhere. It's probably not a sign of food that can be eaten. I could be wrong though. :P

I really love to cook.. and to me, that would be much more appealing than many other mundane features within AC.
