I am experiencing the same problem. For about a week now I’ve had NOTHING from my trees. So I've never been a regular tree-shaker, but have found a fair few items and a whole bunch of wasp nests by giving them a shake every now and then when I have time.
A few nights ago I decided to go around my island and give them all a shake, looking for furniture...and nothing!
The same last night.
Tonight, I've just shaken every single tree on my island (there are LOTS, as Isabelle likes to tell me!), and again...no furniture and only two wasp nests.
There are a few trees which have no free spaces around them, but not that many, and I assume the game would spawn the wasps and furniture in a different tree in that instance? The vast majority of my trees just drop a branch.
Any ideas!?

unlike new leaf, if there are flowers surrounding your trees they won't drop anything at all, even if they are fruit trees. that way the items dont disappear. They could be, I suppose. Nothing's falling and disappearing into the flowers like happens if a balloon pops above a blocked-in tile, though.
I’ve cleared everything from trees that had flowers etc. I still get nothing. I even have trees that have NOTHING around them, completely off by themselves , and I get nothing.Have you made sure EVERY tree has at least one free space in front of it?

One of those X's has to be free for an item to land.
I'd assumed that the items would randomly spawn each morning, and since only a handful of my trees were blocked off, the chances of them repeatedly spawning in those trees was really low - it didn't make sense that I wasn't finding any items.
However, what I realised is that the item will spawn in a particular tree and won't move until you find it - even if it stays there for months on end.
If you have any blocked off trees, I'd recommend shifting whatever is in the way and giving them a shake!
