What stops trees from growing?

I'm hoping someone can help me one of my trees won't grow but I'm not sure what's stopping it from growing
It's probably something super obvious I'm missing

I know that in a 3x3 pattern a tree won't grow and near houses/cliffs they won't grow but is there anything else that stops them?

You can't really see in the picture but I couldn't get a better overlook of it
But there are a 2 rows of trees and on the second two of trees the one left isn't growing but I'm not sure why the spacing is correct too

In this case it's because there area trees surrounding it. It's best to do two rows at a time as when there's a tree in the middle it always seems to die. So...

xx instead of xxx and then once those two are grown then you can add in the third row. Does that make sense?

in a 3x3 formation, the center tree always dies since it's surrounded by all of the other trees.

when it comes to my orchards, i always have them in this formation:

xxoxx
xxoxx

with the Xs representing trees and the Os representing space.

You can do the third row, just make sure to plant only two at a time and then when those trees have grown do the third row. ^^
