What is the difference between a villager photo and a villager poster, and how do you get the photo?

The photos you can earn it from having high friendships with the villagers.
The posters you get them from amiibos.
They look different appearance wise. The posters are for the walls. The photos look like picture frames. You can place them on wall or furniture.

The other reply you got was great. I just wanted to add this link to a guide on getting photos if you want to actively try and increase your chances of getting one. There's also some links in that post to guides on villager friendship mechanics in general.

You can also get posters from villagers currently living on your island just by using them on Harv's Island. Amiibo will let you get posters from any villager as long as you have their Amiibo.

The photos have been around since Wild World. They are basically an achievement to show you've reached true friendship with your villagers.

The posters on the other hand are new to New Horizons, and are obtained by inviting Amiibos to Harvy's Island. They don't have any worthwhile meaning to them other than collecting.

To obtain villager photos, I usually gift them items that cost more than 10,000 bells, and I usually get the photo in less than ten days. This has worked with all of my villagers, as I do have all of their photos. It’s my guaranteed method, although I’m not sure how it works for others.

Photos are basically an achievement. They show you hit the highest level of friendship with that villager.

EDIT: Forgot to mention this, but wrapping the gifts in wrapping paper will raise the friendship level quicker. I recommend giving the villagers wrapped gifts that cost 10,000 bells or more.

Thanks! I have been trying those tactics it hasn’t worked yet but we will see!

Wrapping 2 non-native fruit (Excluding coconuts) actually works wonders. It usually takes 3-4 weeks to get their photo from start if you're lucky with the RNG. I believe some players mail the wrapped fruit to their villagers, it's suppose to have a higher success rate.

Thanks, I don’t want to move anyone out unless I have there photos

This is the best and most up to date guide I know of for getting villager photos. Because they mechanics have changed a couple times since the game came out, and the guide book had some discrepancies with the friendship mechanics - for example sending letters to your villagers gives no friendship points - there is a lot of out dated and wrong information out there.

It pretty much takes around 4 weeks to get a villager’s picture, if you are starting from them just moving in. Dependent on rng, but generally with the methods identified in the thread I linked it i find it really easy and painless to get photos for all my villagers.

I just realized there’s technically no difference between photos and posters you can hang both on the wall and photos are just smaller.

It’s kinda weird

I don't know if this is a factor for photos or not, but I've had two villager birthdays recently, and got photos for both of them in the post the next day - I had had both for a while so I may have almost been there, but given they were a week apart I was either a funny coincidence or there is something more to it.

I think I've got another one in two weeks (my villager birthdays aren't evenly spread out!) and it will be interesting to see if I get another photo then, with another animal I've had for a while.

Ok,I am so excited for the birthdays now, mine are also not evenly spread out and they all happen in like September October and november

photos can be displayed on surfaces and outdoors and have frames around them too. the image is the same, but even aside from the size difference the two items work very differently in the game.

people also value the photos much more in the game, because to most they represent an achievement, while the posters are just a normal reorderable item.

birthdays don’t increase the chance of getting a photo as a return gift as far as I know, but the gifting mechanics work a little different, so if they were villagers who were at the friendship level of being able to give you their photos, maybe the gifts you gave for birthdays, satisfied the gifting requirements to receive a photo!

that’s great though! It makes it feel extra special to get a photo on their birthday!

you can also receive a photo as a reward for fulfilling a request for a villager or playing hide and seek, and I also find those times to be extra special!

I also want to add on that if you interact with a framed photo of a villager, it has a quote from them, and says when their birthday is.
Which is something that posters do not do

That’s really cool!

If they do I need to talk to my villagers more
