What does Cataloguing items involve?

I don't know if this is the best place to put this, but I have to ask this.

On the Re-tail board, I keep seeing mentions of Cataloguing items. What does it mean and what do you even do to accomplish that?

This is one bit that's got me lost. x.x

Items in your catalog are all the items you've ever held. So, to add an item to your catalog you just need to pick it up and drop it. If the item is re-orderable, that means you can then go and order your own. If the item is not re-orderable, you won't be able to get one for yourself but it will be in your catalog and counts towards the badges for that.

When you pick up any furniture or clothing/accessories in the game, it automatically adds it to your catalog in the Nookling's shop. Most (but not all) items can then be ordered from the catalog. Since you only need to have held the item (not own it), and an item's rarity varies from game to game, people will ask to "hold" someone else's item for the purpose of building up their catalog for potential future ordering.
