What does adding someone to your ignored list do?

I found someone pretty rude and I was thinking of adding them to my ignored users list, but I have no clue what it does seeing as I haven't needed to use it in the time I've been on here. could someone tell me what exactly happens when I do this?

According to the FAQ, this is what it does:

If there are particular members that bother you and you do not want to see their posts or receive Private Messages and Emails from them, then you can add these members to your 'Ignore List'.
