So I'm setting up a new town in a few days, though I'm keeping my old town because I'm sentimental, I wanted a fresh start as well. I've learnt a lot of things since I've played new leaf, I was awful at wild world and city folk, and this time I made mistakes early on playing, just little things. So I'm wondering, what do you wish you'd known before you started your town?
Mine are:
- Be a girl (I am a girl, but I've always played as a boy, I learnt I like playing more as a girl after all!)
- Don't start TTing, it's addictive
- Start cataloging stuff, start saving outfits ready for Gracie
- Don't walk around with 9 villagers and streetpass on... Pietro will move in!
- MAP RESET! Even if it takes you days to choose a map, you only get one chance!
- Plot reset! It's really, really worth it, don't compromise!
- Be picky about where you put your PWPs, even if Isabelle says you can't, try shifting slightly, don't compromise, choose wisely!
- Start prompting PWPs by diving ASAP!
- Buy saplings, you'll want them later, and think of that golden axe!
- 10th villagers are not a bad thing, they're great actually because they save you from random villagers appearing!
- Don't be so afraid to get out there and trade with people and talk to people, most people are nice! (Here at least!!)
...don't sell that perfect fruit *facepalm*
So what about you guys? What would you do differently? What do you wish you'd known sooner?

Plot resetting, preventing villagers from moving out when you hear a rumor, cycling, and preparing for Gracie. It would have made my life sooooo much easier in my old towns if I knew any of this.

Yes! Rumours!! Fang saved me from losing Lolly once, I stalked her until she confessed, she was trying to keep it secret. Fang is the best!

Wish I had done plot reset since the beginning and reset my map no matter how long it takes :/ sigh I dont wanna reset my town now due to all the progress I made and dreamies I acquired :(

Before I usually start playing a game, well I usually look up all the info I am curious about ;___; (unless it's spoilers) so I don't really have these problems... But, I guess I wish I were more cautious about where my villagers plot their houses, Colton plotted near the Campsite... it's not as bad, so I let it go I guess. BUT, MOTT on the other hand >___> bad Mott, plotting as close to the front of the coffee shop as he could, he must really like his coffee, but FOR SHAME (cries).

Ummm, don't go placing projects Willy nilly or you'll have to pay to remove it and pay to place it again. Don't place 3 bridges until all 6 are suggested. Just because there is a bridge there doesn't mean you can place one in the same spot if you demolish it. Villagers will ping you for dumb stuff even if there's still projects their personality type can suggest. Buy the saplings and flowers even if you don't want them. Place temporary projects if you don't want to plot reset. This is just a short laundry list.

I would move my house a little. Also, I would plot reset most of my villagers. I don't know, I don't think I screwed up too bad before joining this site.

Plot reset, town reset... and face guide when I first got the game e.e and bell tree forums.. e.e I could have been finished with my town long ago if I had found Bell tree sooner

Ha, I love your list :) the plot resetting is a big one for me. I should have started much sooner but when I first got the game I planned to do no tt or anything so I was going to play natural. Of course that didn't last long ;) but I've had to just make do with where I can plot reset villagers to now and I know I could have done a much better job.
And I had no idea about resetting for snap of course. My layout is not terrible, I wish retail were closer to the station and I wish I'd placed my house further along near to the entrance to Main Street. Although my house location is probably the one thing I'm genuinely pleased with. I put it up against the train tracks and in between the cliff and a pond with a PWP in front so nobody could ever move by me accidently :)
So much I'd do different if I'd known...

Let's see, map resetting, plot resetting and being aware some PWP's cannot be demolished so choose the spot wisely. I wish I had started growing hybrid flowers much sooner, not sold my perfect fruit almost immediately and bought saplings and bushes everyday to use for landscaping later on.

It took over a year to complete my first town having to redo A LOT of things compared to the 3 weeks to get my second town how I wanted (minus the PWP's which are random and take a bit longer).

There are some really interesting thoughts, and a lot of people have brought up plot resetting, I wish I'd done it from the beginning! I thought it was cheating and I'm a goody two shoes, but it turns out I'd rather cheat a little than have my dreamies move in where I'd planned to put PWPs!! And and I wish I'd started on my dirt paths on day one, and I wish I'd known how to get my PWP requests!! I'm going to try not to time travel, or at least no more than making sure I can move villagers from my old town into my new (just some of them...) because there's no way I'm letting them fall into the void!! Thanks everyone who added to the suggestions!

I'm laughing right now because I'm planning to reset my first town eventually, and good thing! You should see my bushes, they are all willy nilly all over the place. Like, 5 blue hydrangeas in a row, then a holly, then a couple of white azaleas. I didn't know a thing about the shrubs, what colors they were, when they bloomed, nothing, and it shows!
