what do you guys consider when making a town flag?

this question is mostly aimed at people who make original flags, but this can go for people who use other designs for the flags too. what goes into your town flag, how do you determine if it's the right flag to capture your big fat island?

I'm not great at making flags myself (I mostly stick to objects and signs), but I can maybe speak to what makes a good one ( at least in my opinion). minuecharm on tumblr makes the best flags I've seen. I think what makes them so good is that they include super detailed objects/scenes AND the island name. I'm not sure why, but I kinda need my flags to have the name on them. I'd totally recommend giving their tumblr a look, it inspires me so much!

i usually design my town flag after ive done most of the decorating on my island. right now it has a bunch of different themes like mushrooms, stars, black/white and honey colours. i would try to incorporate all of that into the flag and hopefully it turns out good and not ugly and bad

For me I went.
Airports yellow. I want to do something with the night sky. Use blue and yellow and white. Played around and made a little design.

Well, I try to visualize the first image that pops in my head. My island name has the word Tiki, so what do people usually see?

Bamboo, tiki heads, tiki huts, fruity drinks with little umbrellas..

Then tiki mug was the best solution and I toiled over the design.

my island theme is “dreams”, so i’m thinking I’m going to do a cute animal sleeping on the flag as symbolism

My first flag that I used said my islands name Acorn and had an acorn on it.
After spending time on my island and starting to decorate it more, I changed it to a pine tree with some mountains in the background with the moon and stars.
I wanted it to fit things that I like and I've always really loved the night sky and nature so I wanted my flag to reflect things I love and how I'm decorating my island (lots of star items + the moon).

My town name is Oakheart. My town flag is going to be an oak leaf on top of a heart. I made it once. I can make it again! I haven't redrawn it yet.

My island is named Eventide from Breath of the Wild but I didn't really actually want a BOTW themed flag because my island is very flowery and whatnot so I looked up cursive cross stitch letters and used them to make a flag with a cursive E and F

I reeaallly loved my NL town flag, but decided to go a totally different route this time around and turn the flag more into a logo/brand for my island. It’s just a W and an E fused together in a circle. Used blue to represent the sea, yellow-orange to represent nt the sun, and used a peachy color for the background (peaches being my native fruit). Really like how it turned out. Also used the WE in the logo I made for the museum.

Here’s some of the branding, I’m also sporting some Wits’ End merch. My villagers love the hoodie.
