What are mystery bags?

I've seen people auctioning them and I'm curious as to what exactly they are. Anybody know?

There is a kind of quest during toy day (around christmas) that you basically play as santa clause. This raindeer gives you santa's bag and you are supposed to go around giving presents to your villagers, but if you just not do anything and keep the bag it turns into a "mystery bag" the next day. since it is only august you have to time travel to get it.

Ah. I'd do it on my second game, but on my main, it'd break my heart to have my villagers waiting for Santa and getting nothing.

Some people use regular items... Like buying wrapping paper from Nooklings and wrapping 'mystery' items. Almost like when you recieve a gift

XD That doesn't sound as awesome, but meh. Still better than having your villagers all excited and then nothing happens.
