Although amiibo are there to enhance your enjoyment on games that support them (e.g. unlock content, personalize said character), their usage depends on which game that supports them you're playing and is mostly kept to a minimum. The latter is pretty much why they're mostly ending up being a collector's item since they do look pretty good.
If you care on getting the most out of your amiibo, you might want to buy any that is cross-compatible with a lot of games. Any Mario character (but Toad and Diddy Kong as of now), Link and Kirby are definitely the ones to consider if you want to test the waters.
