Welp....help.

I know I'm screwed but anyway:
Ok, so yesterday, I offered to hold some stuff while someone restarted, after waiting for about 45 minutes, I had to leave so I left my town open with my ds plugged in.
When I got home, I had resetti error, but since there were no items anywhere, I assumed that they hadn't dropped anything off yet and waited for them to be online again.

Now the person wants the items back and I don't have any.
I'm sending them restitution, but what happened? If the game crashed they were in town, most people ask to reopen, so I'm guess it didn't crash while they were there. If it crashed after or before, there would be no drop off to begin with and since the games saves while people leave or arrive, nothing would have disappeared, I think?
The only people I have added are shop traders that I trust or people who haven't been on in days(I checked), so theft is out.
What could have possibly happened?

They dropped the items off, and you got an error before you had a chance to save, so it's like they were never there. (I guess.)

If the game errored and you didn't save after they dropped their stuff off, then they should still have their stuff, like Jon Snow said, it's like they were never there.

They saved, thinking everything was OK.
I get those resetti errors sometimes when I'm island hopping.

Everything I'd bought was gone from the drop box.

I had that happen once with someone, they came over to grab something from my town, and I ended the session but it errored while saving and the item disappeared completely, like we both never had it. I guess it's just something that can happen, which is a bummer.

I don't think there is a way they could had lost their stuff. If the game errors when they drop their stuff and before a save, they will still have their stuff wherever it was last.

If they had an error when everything was in your town, but it saved prior, the stuff will still be in your town.
