It's Midnight in my town and I was doing a stroll. I saw Ruby who told me Sydney might be moving.... So I went to find Sydney but she's already asleep. If I wait til morning, will she already be in boxes or will I still be able to convince her to stay?

you can safely tt back to an earlier hour when sydney is awake (6am is the start of a new day in ACNL, so TT'ing back from midnight to, say, 3pm, isn't considered going a day back) and tell her to stay.
all in all it depends on when she's moving. you could be safe just waiting until tomorrow if her moving date isn't for a few days, but there's no way for you to even know that without checking with her. :-)

You might want to do as Crash suggests. I lost Rodeo because I though I had time to stop him from moving. I'd heard a rumor that he was thinking about moving but he didn't ping me. I meant to log back on later that same day to see if he'd ping but I forgot. He was boxed up the next morning.

If you just stopped a mover 2 or 3 days ago you should be safe.
I got a rumor that Lolly was moving but it was her birthday. No way to get her outside.
So I waited the next day and she pinged me right away.

If it's pass 5 days than I would go back to the afternoon and get her to ping you.
If you are playing in real time go back just pass the fishing tournament so she'll ping you.
On fishing tournament days I go inside to talk to all the villagers a lot. They usually spill if someone is moving.

When I ask, they usually say they're moving a couple of days from the day I ask
do you mean when another villager tells you about the mover? because that doesn't necessarily mean anything. if Ruby told you Sydney is thinking of leaving in a few days, that could mean tomorrow. also, when villagers tell you someone "may be thinking about moving" or something along those lines, they are moving.
if you mean the villager, most of the time when they ping you about leaving, it'll be five days from that date, but that's only if you play a lot and always catch the pings. if for whatever reason Sydney hasn't pinged you all this time but has been planning to move anyway, she could still be in boxes tomorrow.

I know that may sounding confusing lol, but I highly suggest just TT'ing back to an earlier time of the day when Sydney was awake and telling her to stay. it's always better to be safe c:

Well I time traveled anyway. But not before an adventure. I wanted 9pm but I didn't check and ended up at 9 AM. So I closed without saving and started up again so I can go to 9 PM. The weird thing is that I had my winning trophy but when I went to the notice board and it says I never participated at all!

It took AGES for Sydney to ping me so I did the "swimming in the sea" trick (I made quite a few bells and found a Turban Shell for the first time) and when she finally pinged me, she says she was planning on leaving on the 18TH! Which would be 4 days from now. Either way I stopped her from moving......

When you TT back the fishing tournament results get changed.
Did the villagers ask where you were or that you missed the tournament. Since you TTed they wouldn't say you won.
Tomorrow the gold winner will be on the board. Next time just save/quit and run to her house to get her to ping you.
It might take some tries to get her to ping.

Good that she's staying. Events and holidays are time when movers should be off limit. Harvest Day I had my first mover rumor and couldn't get her to ping. Found out that I had to wait along time for the event to be over.

Yeah it's always worth getting to the villager as soon as you can. I lost Ed by waiting too long after I heard he was moving as I assumed he would be going in the usual 5 or so days.
It turns out I had heard the rumour too later and he was in boxes the next day. :(
