I got my Oculus Rift last September, initially with the sole reason of playing Minecraft Java (Vivecraft mod) with it. However, I've also ended up getting some other VR titles too. Some free, some not-so-free.
There is one thing to note when playing VR games though, and it's that smooth movement can be
very, very nauseating in VR. You can eventually get used to it after a few months, but for the first few you'll definitely want to go for games with teleport movement instead.
Here are a few of my recommendations
I'll start with
Vivecraft first, given that's what I started with. It's a real good mod, and there's something just
grand about seeing your creations in virtual reality. It brings a sense of scale to everything! It's nice to have a VR game you can just sit back and chill in too, as it's
literally just Minecraft. Plus it's fully compatible with other mods, too. As for comfort levels, the game gives you a lot of options, letting you teleport or move smoothly and even has an FOV reduction option for smooth movement to reduce motion sickness on top of that. Just be warned that the
Minecraft Windows 10 Edition VR support is not good at all, with forced smooth movement and no FoV options. Stick with Java.
I then decided to grab the free VR game
Rec Room off of Steam. I'll admit, I did slightly regret doing so this early, as the game's
so good that it kind of set a standard in my mind which other VR games struggled to match. The game itself is pretty much just a bunch of social VR minigames - think of it kind of like
Wii Sports (Resort), except with online multiplayer. There are modes to just chill back and relax with other people, competitive modes like Paintball or Laser Tag, more relaxed "vs" modes like Disc Golf and Charades (aka "3D Pen Pictionary") and even some very unique 3-4 player PvE "Quest" modes, one of which released just last month! And the best bit is it's entirely cross-platform too - be it Rift, Vive, Mixed Reality or PSVR, you're able to play with one another. The game gets updated every 2 weeks and I couldn't recommend it enough. If I could only ever play one VR game,
I would choose this one.
I've also tried
Sublevel Zero Redux, and found it very fun. It's basically a 6DOF shooter roguelike game. (If you don't know what that means: You get to fly a spaceship in a 3D space with complete control over where you fly and rotate. 6 Degrees of Freedom.) While you're restricted to only smooth movement, there's a plethora of comfort options available to help with motion sickness. The only real problem I have with this game is that the sound is completely in mono, making it very difficult to keep track of where you're being shot from. Unfortunate! (That, and the Oculus Touch controllers aren't supported, so you kinda have to play this one with a regular old controller like a Xbox One pad or something.)
Recently, I've been trying out
PAYDAY 2 VR as well. It's a free update to the original
Payday 2, and it's absolutely fantastic. Unfortunately the movement system is a little jank, with smooth movement or "smooth teleportation", which can be quite nauseating if you're not used to it. (Make sure you're comfortable in VR before playing this one!) HOWEVER, once you do get over that initial hurdle, this is one of the best games I've ever played in VR, if only because it's flat-out the full Payday 2 experience. It's even compatible with non-VR players, so you can play with your non-VR friends even when you're in VR yourself. I recommend watching NerdCubed's videos on this game if you want to see what it's like for yourself. ;o
Those are my main four, anyway. I
would try out Bethesda's VR exploits (DooM VFR, Fallout 4 VR or Skyrim VR... probably Skyrim VR) but Bethesda's decided to package what are obviously just mods of the original games as
full, standalone paid products. I 'aint paying for Skyrim a third time. If it was a addon or even a small bit of paid DLC, I'd consider it. But not a full priced standalone release. Can't say I've felt like playing the Batman or LA Noire VR games though, but that may be that I'm just not a fan of Batman or Rockstar games in general. (I've heard good things about LA Noire VR, however!)
tl;dr: VR is quite fun, but still in its early days. You'll probably only have a small group of up to 5 games which you'll actively play. One of those will probably be Rec Room, because it's free and awesome. (Maybe don't get PSVR though. I've heard many people have had problems with the tracking on PSVR, along with just general lag issues as well.)
