hi all! happy holidays <3 I hope you’re warm and cozy wherever you are!

I restarted my island for 3.0 back in October, and I’m having so much fun playing again. I don’t really have a theme in mind beyond going with my gut lol, and that includes finding villagers. I am, however, finding myself surprised at who I am liking or not liking as much as I thought!

I got Filbert as my first lazy, and I feel awful because he’s given me a nickname (spud lol), but… I don’t know if he’s going to stick around forever! I’m not even sure which lazy I’d like more, but there’s something about him not quite clicking.

Similarly, I have had and loved Lolly in the past, but this time around I don’t feel that same connection. Maybe it’s because Poppy was my first formal villager, and her hobby is more varied? I did also just find Purrl, who is another cat, and I’m loving her, and also want Kiki, so maybe I can’t have too many cats haha

I am surprised by how much I love Hamlet!! he was my first jock and is so so cute :,)

I was surprised by my love for Shari, she is just so cute! Also Hamphrey the cranky hamster. I think it’s because the cranky personality looks and sounds so funny coming from such a tiny little hammy. There’s also Penelope, I’m not a big fan of the mice but the bow wrapped around her ears is just adorable.

I always thought I’d love ketchup, but after having her on my island, I quickly realised that there are other peppy villagers I much prefer.

I used to love so many of the cat villagers, but I find them too tall and odd looking since new leaf. Kiki was one of my favourite villagers in wild world, but now I just don’t like her design.

Yea...lazies are something else in this game. They really missed the mark on them in NH. I don't know if it's a translation error or NA took liberties and the Japan version is more endearing (sort of like how NA reworked dialogue in the original AC so villagers were mean and spiteful) but they're so gross.

The NL lazies were so charming in their own ways, but I can't even click with any of them. I have Punchy on my island and I barely interact with him because he talks about his bug friends, eating nasty food, eating food in the tub until it congeals into a paste, or talking about how he tried to eat his weight in food only to 'reverse snack' it all over the floor.

The translations on this game are the most PC. Characters have no individual attributes that really spry away anymore. They missed the beat :(

I thought I'd love Maple, because she is adorable but I didn't like her as much as Fauna or Molly. Since all the normals have similar dialogue, I ended up moving Maple out sooner than I thought I would. There are so many charming normal villagers, I usually have at least two.

I thought I'd love Judy because of how cute she is with her sparkling eyes and color palette but, tbh, she really just didn't end up growing on me as much as other snooty villagers have. Diana has always been my fave but Judy doesn't even really compare to Freya or Francine in my mind for some reason. I ended up replacing her as soon as I got her photo because I just didn't end up getting as attached to her.

However, someone that I did get so attached to when I didn't expect it was Katt! She randomly moved into my New Leaf town and ruined my paths so I naturally hated her at first but she grew on me so much that I actually got sad when she asked to leave, even though I couldn't decorate around my house as much as I wanted to with her there. Now every time I see her I get so soft lol.

When New Horizons came out and there was this huge fuss over Raymond I also thought he was pretty cute and that I would love to have him one day. But I felt no rush and he landed on my invite when the occasion occurs list. At some point I met him while island hopping, in 2023 I think. I was pretty happy that I would finally meet the famous Raymond! But I didn't love him at all. He was fine, but there were few others smug villagers that I would rather have. So we parted ways rather quickly.

This is the one instance where I was sure that I would love a villager and it didn't happen. Usually it's a little different: I end up loving villagers who at first were just enough to invite to my island.

Mines a vise versa.

When Megan was revealed as a new villager for new horizons, I thought she was the ugliest villager going. Right to the top of my nope pile.
Then one day when I was visiting dream islands I found one with her on it. I don't know what changed or why, but I instantly fell in love with her.
Shes my go to normal villager now. If im not just letting the game auto fill villagers, im choosing her every time.

Just like Muna I used to love Raymond and I really wanted to have him on my island. After a while the excitement vanished and I just found him "meh". But still, I remember and get the crazy hype that was around him because I was a part of it, alas in the end he didn't make it into my top 5 favourite villagers.

Not a specific villager but rather an entire personality: lazy.

Lazy villagers were my favourite in previous games. I find their dialogue very off-putting in New Horizons.
I agree. I can’t compare it to New Leaf because I never played it but lazy is probably my least favorite personality type in New Horizons. Just not interesting to me.

On the other hand, I thought peppy was off-putting at first but Gabi has really grown on me.

I recently ran into cube randomly on an island and invited him to live on mine, as i had him in new leaf and loved him there so i thought I'd like him in new horizons but.. idk. He seemed much cooler in nl LOL he just doesn't seem the same, maybe it's the lazy dialogue like mentioned above that "ruins" (not relaly but that's the best I can describe it) him for me now idk

On the inverse I didn't ever think I'd like Jitters but once I randomly got him as a move-in and I grew to like him so much I bought an amiibo coin of him so I could have him on future islands lol

Villager I thought I'd love... Cephalobot. And I still think his robot design and space theme is really cool. But he's not among my top faves. Mainly I feel like the smug personality doesn't suit him. And nothing in his dialogue reflects his strangeness. Just seems like a copy of my favorite smug villager who is more suitable for the personality. Maybe cranky would've been better.

Villager I didn't think I'd love... Frita. Before I randomly found her on a mystery island, I had never heard of this silly cheeseburger sheep. Maybe I let her move in because she represents one of my favorite foods. Her friendliness really grew on me though. And seeing that big smile makes me happy everytime. I redesigned her house into an even cozier cafe.

I agree so much, now I'm limiting my island to just 1 lazy villager (same with jocks because they pretty much say the same few things over and over). In ACNL and older games, I remember lazies just being a lot more chill. Now about everything they say is either disgusting or otherwise unintelligent. Too bad because there are a lot of nice looking ones.

I have a similar sentiment with you about normal villagers in general. I also ended up moving Maple and Molly too. :'( I still think both are adorable though.

at first, i felt lucky to have sprinkle as one of my starters in new leaf. i like penguins, i like peppy villagers, and her design is adorable. then i missed one playdate because i was taking a shower, and she flipped out on me. now, we are at war. she WILL leave this town at all costs.

on the other hand, i didn't really care for sprocket at first compared to ribbot, but now he is one of my favorite villagers of all time. he's a robot ostrich who sings screamo in the middle of a campground and definitely doesn't care about other people's opinions according to his e-reader card stuff... for better or worse. his hhp request is a robot factory. he is a robot. this is like if a human requested a cloning facility for their new house. there is something SO wrong with this guy and i love him for it. of course he has some of the most development out of anyone in my write-personalities-and-backstories-for-every-villager project lmfao

(why does his new leaf photo look like this...)

For me it's Shari and Poncho. They were my first villagers in ACNH and I thought that both of them looked a bit basic, but then Shari was so caring that I couldn't let her go and got attached.

And then I found out that I share a birthday with Poncho. I could never ask my birthday twin to move out.😅 so those two have grown on me.

I thought I would get at least one bunny villager, since I love bunnies in real life, but I can't stand them in animal crossing. The bunny villager model is just weirdly proportioned, and most of the villager options just aren't cute enough. (The faces are often weird.) Sasha might be the only one I would be tempted to get.

Drake: he is so cute so when he came to Up Falls I thought I'd probably found a permanent Lazy villager but over the last few weeks he just hasn't grown on me like I thought he would. That's okay, though, because I love cycling through villagers.

I think the ones that surprised me the most as far as thinking I wouldn't like them and really do are the smug villagers. Maybe it's because I'm old, I dunno, but they're a hoot. I'm hoping one day I can find Shep again because he just cracks me up.

And I was thinking I'd probably really like Skye but now I can't remember, are all the 'normal' villagers as needy as she is? She constantly 'doesn't feel like being alone' and has to come to my house and plop down on the floor to read. Granted, it is a quick trip back to the house and I can empty my full pockets into storage while she's there but every couple of days seems like a little much.

Yay for more Shari love! The first time she appeared on my island, I couldn’t wait for her to move out. But she’s such a sweetheart that I couldn’t let her go, and she has been on every island I’ve had since!

Tom, one of the two cranky cats in the game, was a solid meh for me. I invited him to my island so I'd have a cranky and get the DIYs and reactions but since I got back into my game this winter I love him and his cranky antics. He was never in my top 10 villagers that I wanted on my island but I find parting with him harder and harder to do, lol. He might just end up staying forever
