When a villager pings you and sells you a painting, will it always be genuine, or can they sometimes sell you a fake Redd painting?
I?ve had my villagers ping me a couple times to sell me paintings. Their prices are always high (like 7000 bells) but I?ve always gotten a genuine painting from them.
Is there a chance I could get a fake one?

Yes, they can sell (or give) you fakes.
I'm not really sure if this is true, but something I've noticed with my villagers is that the better our friendship, the higher the chance they give a genuine artwork. Sometimes they'll feel guilty of having you pay bells for it, so they'll give you the painting for free. I always get a little suspicious when they do that, but I've gotten real art that way as well, so I usually take the chance when they offer me something I haven't collected yet.

I've gotten both real and fakes from my dudes. If you want to check them with looking at a guide, Reese will tell you if it is fake when you try to sell it.

I have also received both real and fake paintings from my villagers. It's only the smug, uchi and cranky villagers that sell or give them to you and the price is based on their personality. I think the smug villagers sell for around 7000, the uchi for around 4000-5000, and the cranky for around 3000-4000. But if your friendship level is high, sometimes they'll change their mind and just give it to you free of charge. I've gotten fake paintings when they were gifted to me as well as when I bought them. But I usually buy them no matter what on the off-chance they turn out to be real.

Tbh in my saves they were more or less always fake unless it was one of those always genuine ones.

Also you can just put them up in your home (on the wall or just standing) to see if it's fake or real.

Kabuki sold one to me. He usually tries to pawn lots of furniture on me so I was really surprised to see that he could sell paintings as well. Oh it was one of the paintings, I did not have. So I ran to the museum and got slapped by Blathers. You win this time, Kabuki!
