Villagers not sending gifts back?

I'm not receiving gifts back in the mail. I will write a full page of letter and attach with a gift to all villagers, time travel to the next day,and only receieve a written letter with no gifts attached from each individual I have written to. What prevents villagers from gifting back?

Also, is there a cheap alternative to wrting letters more quickly? Or does the AI in this game recognizes faults?
Such as will the AI recognizes if my characters only writes one word or just randomly types letters the alphabet?

yeah you only need to write a sentence or two at most. and i'd say they don't necessarily gift in return, they will randomly send you gifts.

Maybe it depends on friendship level/random? I used to get more gifts back before, but when I started sending letters less often, I started getting less back in return.

Sometimes, I'm lazy and just write, "Hi," on the letter, and it works for most villagers. Only a couple of villagers said something about it being short in their return letters, ha. I tried doing jibberish a couple times, just to see, but didn't get anything in return. Maybe jibberish plus those key words would do the trick.

This is very good, I do something similar (I know the same possible 'key' words) but I put into sentences. (albeit there is no need to).
Number of lines may well be important: this has the max of 5 so should work very well & I'll give it a go.
I write a daily letter to each villager, all reply, about half include a gift, half don't, I think its random who includes a return gift.

Seems to go stale after a while, take a break, restart sending letters & the villagers reply with renewed energy (more than half send a gift back).
When I stop sending letters, I get random single letters from villagers every so often, villager does not include a gift.

Worth sending letters - increases friendship level, with daily letters to all villagers very easy to get gold letter writing badge. You can get back fruit - other town fruit, persimmons & bamboo have all come my way (rare but it has happened in more than one town).
