Villagers leaving your island

When a villager chooses to leave your island, how long do you have to find a new villager through mystery islands before the game with automatically fill the lot?

I think it's random like in the previous game. Had it happen at one day, and then also two to three days.

I’m hoping I can find someone new before the automatic filling of the slot happens

When my last villager moved, her plot was empty for 1 day. The next day it was sold randomly, but the villager came from the void of another island. So maybe random?

Was that one day from them saying they were leaving? Or one day since they were in boxes?

They were in boxes one day.
The next day, they were gone, empty plot.
Day after, plot was sold.

So two days after in boxes.
