Just wondering, but do you ever just try to keep it as close as possible to their original homes? I grew really tired of their houses when it was completely destroyed by shirts, bugs, and fish so I've been trying as of late, and I have this huge elaborate plan on how to get certain pieces into their homes in certain spots.

Anyone do this too? And if anyone wants to do this, I can share my plan with you haha.

Give me your plan lol since i am trying to get a few sloppy items from a certain villager and he isn't biting lol

I too would like to hear your plan! I wrecked Wolfgang's house and am trying to fix it up.

I usually just try sending or giving villagers furniture I want them to use if I don't like their decoration. If I like how someone's house looks like when it's original, I try hard not to give them fish or bugs. But it feels bad to turn down requests.

Mine is more like giving villagers furniture to make it exactly the same rather than taking items from it. But it works in similar manners.

All right, this takes a lot of patience and a lot of saving and quitting.

So the first thing is the fill up Retail's spots with flowers at ridiculous prices that no one would buy at. If the spot isn't being used, leave the flower there. Order all the furniture that is needed to get the house back to how it was originally. Make sure to note the size and what it must replace. There are several ways that the house can be fixed.

1. Villagers can invite you to visit their homes where when you talk to them enough during the visit, you can buy something from them. You can't buy bugs and fish but things like shirts and extra furniture are fair game. When you buy something from them, they will have an open spot in their home. You can mail them that piece of furniture that is meant to be there and they will for sure, place in that spot.

2. Next, villagers will sometimes ask you to give them a new piece of furniture. This can be very general OR they will ask for a small item for a small space OR will ask for an item to be placed on top of a table OR will ask to replace something. If it's to replace something, you're in luck (especially if they want to replace a fish!). Give them the furniture that matches the space and they will replace it. If you are trying to get a specific item from them, it is best to give the furniture when they are inside the house so you will see the switch and they will mostly give you the item that they just replaced yours with.

But if they asked for a general item, this can get tedious. You want to save and quit until the villager is in their home. Go in and give them the item. They will replace a like item in their home with the one you gave them. If where they placed it is not where it is supposed to be, exit out of the game and reload and do it until you're satisfied with the placement.

3. If a villager had two of the same item in their home, the best way to get them both back into the house is to free up the space in their house when you visit them (see #1). Then put the item into Retail and save and quit until that villager goes into Retail. Then PUSH the villager towards the item you want them to buy until they ping it and then convince them to buy it. They will put it into their open spot and voila! They will have two of the same item with no worries.

If you try to give an item that they already have, they will refuse it. If you mail it to them, they will not put it into their houses.

I'm still trying to see if this will work out with replacing fish, but I have Deidre to work that on. I've gotten Bunnie's house back to her original content and I've come close with several others using these methods together. Just gotta mostly work with Gaston and Tex to fix their houses that I ruined so bad. :D

I just keep all my orderable furniture that they might ask for in my letters. I catch them fish now and then, but they start a collection i'll just send them a few things in the mail.

I probably am haha!

But that doesn't necessarily work. If it's a double of an item, they won't put it up in their house. If it's to replace a fish, they won't replace the fish and will just put it in a spot that fits the same size requirement for the item. Or they just don't put it up at all. They even try to sell me the item later. :P

I've had them replace fish and bugs before plenty of times, it doesn't always work because they can replace something else of the same size but they can replace fish. Typically if it's a rarer fish like a shark or coelacanth they'll be less likely to replace it. It also depends on the content of the letter and your friendship level with that animal. If you use the keywords friend, love, present, and the name of the item you're sending them in the letter it will increase their happiness the most and there is an almost certain chance they'll put it in their house.

Wow thank you for the detailed explanation! You really have this figured out. This kind of stuff is actually kind of interesting.
I'll have to do what you described. I didn't know it was possible to give them back an item that they used to have two of. Now I can return the other one of Coco's exotic screens too. Great! Time to start working on those villager's houses.

Oh yeah! I'm curious about one other thing, too! Do you remember how long it has approximately taken for you to fix your villagers' houses with these methods?

But what I want is to put their house exactly how it was before. Sure, I can pile all of their original furniture into the house but it won't have the same aesthetic. Plus it runs the risk of them replacing an item that should be there with item just sent. Which is why I do the method that I do rather than just sending everything via mail. I find it more reliable as tedious as it is.

A long time? I think. Haha. I've been using my extra characters for help in case they give them the request for the home visit or furniture instead of my mayor. I've been TTing a lot lately so it's helped speed up the process a bit too, but mostly just keep at it until it's done :)

Haha I thought so! But this method is worth it. It certainly is the best one out there. Thanks so much for sharing! It's a good thing that I'll be TTing too for some time still. It'll speed this up! The fish problem will be interesting to handle.

I don't mind the fish that are on tables and such. It's the 2x1 fish like salmon that is gonna be hard to replace. Might have to see if they'll replace it with the general furniture request. I tried Retail already. That one didn't work lol

So no one has asked you to replace a fish in particular? I think I remember that a villager once asked me to do that, but I'm not sure if it actually happened or if I just remember wrong, haha. Now it bothers me again.

General furniture requests are when they ask for any kind of furniture. So they don't ask to replace anything. They just want new furniture. These are not bad requests. When they're in their house when you give them the furniture, they'll replace something in their house with the item you just gave them. I've had it be a fish that they replaced.

I like redecorating villagers' houses the way I want them by sending them tons of stuff (I think Rolf really needed my help). So basically if you ever get a villager from me you can pretty much guarantee they are 100% NOT original and probably wearing a Hello Kitty t-shirt.

I don't find that preserving the originality of villager homes is important to my play style. I'm too fond of making my villagers happy, and I love how excited they get when I complete their requests.

I'd rather have messy villager houses than never do the favors that they so frequently ask of me.
