So, a thread a little while back (the Quirky In-Game Habits thread) gave me the idea to give my villagers little "yards," individual spaces that are sort of meant for them. It's sort of invigorating up my design, since it gives me a lot of little areas to think about... But I'm also pondering exactly what to put in my little villager's yards, and, in a few places, where to put them. So, I'd like a few ideas or opinions!
For anyone interested in my progress, or the sort of space I have to work with (which oftentimes runs "not a lot"), I have a dreamtown here: 5500-5236-2806
Here's what I have so far:
Kabuki: 4 of the little farm-tiles, off to the side, bordered by Sweet Olive bushes and a tree; I've been pondering giving him the Rice Rack PWP, maybe to serve as a back fence, since it fits in the area he's in, and he's mentioned that the scarecrow makes him nostalgic for a country youth.
Julian: Given that he only really has room for one little row of Jacob's Ladders behind his house, I decided to assign a little area just across the road from him to be "his yard." It's got a log bench and some flower arrangements...Probably put a few blue hydrangeas along there, too. Considering replacing one of the pine trees on the border with a lemon tree, since a lemon was his first gift to my mayor, but I'm not sure if it'd break up the "pine woods" feel too much.
Skye: Working on just giving her a cutely-decorated stump (once I can get one), and a bunch of flowers in blue and white, sort of filling in the area between her house and the upper left corner of town.
Coco: This is a vaguer idea, but since she's got a fair bit of yard-space, and a lovely view of the ocean, I thought I'd give her a little bench or chair or something, where she can relax and look out at the sea, and surround it with some flowers... Though I'm not sure what kinds, or what sort of bench. Thoughts? She's sort of borderline with my next thing to bring up, which is...
What I'm still not sure about:
Hazel: I really have no clue. *shrug* She has sent me a few letters about her gardening efforts, so I could play with that, or I could think of something, I dunno, sort of outdoorsy for her. It's tricky.
Baabara: ???? I got nothing. I was contemplating, I dunno, some sort of topiary? The placement of her house makes it weird. She borders a zen area, if it helps. I suppose I could also place "her space" across the road, but that doesn't leave much room before the lake/river, does it?
Anabelle: She at least has some space; there used to be (I hope used to be; I removed it recently, or thought about it, so sometimes I get mixed up) a wind turbine there, related to a different villager, so one can fit in some small object between her and the road.
Zucker: There just aren't enough food options, though I could do more with mushrooms or fruit (Actually, there's a bunch of fruit trees right next to him; could I do a thing with that? Well, that space might be Ribbot's, but I still could move stuff)... Hm. Another option might be something water-y, since he is a seacreature. He and Papi live pretty close by each other, so if I can think of a good thing for a pair of lazy neighbors, it could go there.
Papi: I sort of imagine him as the town artist, if that helps. We're getting deep into "I have not given one single thought to their yards" territory. He's got a pretty big space next to him, though, and a smaller space on the other side. I was thinking of putting a little "riverwalk" area next to him on the more open of the sides.
Ribbot: I need to think of something science-y. One thought would be a wind turbine, so he can get some power for his robot fuel cells... Huh. That could be workable.
As you can see, I have some ideas, but not a lot of certainty, so any ideas anyone could suggest or help me clarify, much appreciated!
