Hi everyone, so I have Judy in my town and the person I got her from gave her two outfits. One was a shirt I didn’t really mind, the other was super ugly. She eventually stopped wearing the ugly outfit, and even gave it to me. (Does this mean she can never wear it again, or was it a coincedence?)
Anyway, now she’s wearing a different ugly outfit I have never seen her wear in the month+ I’ve had her, and I didn’t give it to her. Why? Did a visitor give it to her? Did she have it from her previous owner and never wear it? I have time travelled to fall to gather mushrooms, is it related? Please help, I’m losing my mind!

Did you ever dilever a package to her from another villager? That happened to me, there was a dress inside and Hazel started wearing it. or maybe it is from her old island but she just decided to wear it. I think she might still wear clothes even after she gives them to you, it might be just a coincednce. Does the items appear in her closet when you open it?

Oh wow, I didn’t even know you could check their closets!
She doesn’t have the first ugly shirt in it, so I guess she did give it to me. She only has that shirt I don’t mind, and the new ugly shirt. I don’t remember delivering a package to her with it in it, but maybe I forgot?

Thanks for your help, but I don’t remember ever giving a package to her so I still feel like I’m going mad lol.

Also, does anyone know if telling a villager the outfit they were given from a package is ugly, they won’t wear it? Audie made me give Genji a horrible Astro Dress...

I am not sure if their closets indicate if the item is out of their wardrobe for sure, but you could try gifting him other clothes until it doesnt show in there anymore. I saw people say that you can cycle something out of their closets by gifting them lots of other clothes but i havent tried it myself, to be honest.

I am not 100% sure if this is an actual thing or a coincidence that I went through...
Sherb had a shirt that I did not give him as well as a hat (previous owner), after having him for a bit and our friendship deepening, he ended up gifting me or selling (I can't remember) me both items and did not have them in his closet and never wore them again.
I was able to gift him the shirt back (I thought he looked nice in it) and he didn't even remember it was something he had before.

Also, it might be worth a shot telling them it's ugly if you're ever prompted. I've wanted to try doing the same but the prompt hasn't come up when they're in an outfit I dislike yet

Lmao wait there's a dialogue prompt for saying their clothes are ugly?? I have never seen that before

oh my god!
I went through the exact same thing with Sherb! in his past island before I adopted him, they gave him a soccer shirt. I found this extremely annoying even though it didn't look particularly ugly on him. I mean i did over dramatise it just a smidge but I didn't think it suited him at all. I would drop whatever I was doing if I saw him wearing it to complain to Isabelle about it

then, recently... he gave it to me as a gift. I put it on the wall as a momento next to all of his posters and photo
I'm happy they added this mechanic, but also confused. if you're going to do that then why not just reset clothing when you adopt them from another town? and why does complaining to isabelle effectively do nothing?

telling them not to wear the gifted clothing from other villagers does not work, unfortunately. had melba and pecan on my island briefly. pecan gifted melba a rubber suit, of all things, supposedly to "make up" for a fight (seemed more like a mean prank to me). i told melba not to wear it when she asked what i thought, but a few days later she was wearing it anyway.

Thanks everyone for their responses! Ugh villagers changing outfits seemed like a great feature at first, but has become my personal nightmare lol

same. I'm lichrally happy to sacrifice friendship to avoid fashion disasters. I learned my lesson after someone gave Muffy a GOTDAMN instant muscles suit. WHY THE HELL DIDN'T YOU LISTEN TO ME MUFFY? I VERY STERNLY TOLD YOU THAT YOU LOOK LIKE GARBAGE.

my advice would be to keep the gift box in your inventory without opening it if you get a request like that, that way you only get -1 friendship points instead of -2 or -3 which you could get if you open it and/or bin it

LOLL a rubber suit! The exact same thing happened to me with Melba too!

Yeah it doesn't make sense?? And don't they say something like "Please don't tell anyone you saw me wear it" after you tell them not to wear it?? Why are you wearing it outside in public then???

Really?!! oops i always open the gift first to make sure what is inside. If it is a cute dress or something, i will go ahead and pass it on even after it is opened. Hazel and Rosie are too nice, because they were almost the only ones i did this to, and also the only ones to give me their pics haha! This is good advice! I might stop being nosey now XD

Yeah it makes absolutely NO SENSE! I feel bad for any kids who have to deal with inappropriate outfits :c

LOL not "ugly" per se! Idk if it's only between normal and snooty personalities but there's a dialogue where the snooty compliments the normal's outfit and they both ask you what you think of it and you have three options, one agreeing, one saying eh, and the other basically no but I can't remember what it says specifically

When do they ask about their outfit where you can reply that they shouldn't wear it? I've haven't gotten that yet!

you can still be nosy if you want! this is from memory, but I believe it's correct

give the gift to designated villager without opening it: +3 friendship (both recipient and sender)
open it but still successfully gift it to designated villager: +1 friendship (both)

leave it unopened in your inventory but fail to gift it on time: -1 friendship (sender)
open it but leave it in your inventory: -2 friendship (sender)
open it and take it out of your inventory: -3 friendship (sender)

honestly I might try quitting out of the game before they give the quest next time. these villagers seriously must pick out their clothes in the dark

edit: oh and for reference, opening the gift and taking it out of your inventory is the equivalent of hitting them over the head till they get angry or sad lol. poor lil guys
if you don't want villager pics tho, this really doesn't matter that much
