Hi. I recently acquired a villager from someone and they have a shirt in their rotation that i am not fond of. Is there any way I can..get rid of it.

The only way I know of is to keep giving them other clothing items and hope they put them in their wardrobe instead of displaying them in their house (and in the same way, if they display a clothing item in their house that you wanted them to wear, you can keep giving them small furniture items until they replace the clothing and put it in their wardrobe). After a few outfits--I wanna say maybe 3 or 4?--old ones will start being removed and they'll only have the newest ones and their default. I had to do this with Marina as complaining to Isabelle about her clothing only temporary put her back in her default shirt before she started wearing the ugly one again.

Okay, see i *thought* this was how it worked for a quick second until i realized its not. I noticed this with nan. I gave her a sweater. She wore it for a bit then it was displayed in her house. I grave her a dress, the sweater was still displayed, but she wore the sweater and the dress on and off. Same with umbrellas. She keeps the umbrella i gave her displayed in her house but carries it when it rains.
This is different than it was in new leaf where they treat their clothes like clothes or like furniture with zero overlap. That being said, at least in new leaf they gave you the opportunity to buy the item in question.

Wait, are you sure? That's strange, these methods have worked very consistently for me with Marina--the instant muscle suit I tried to get rid of no longer displays in her wardrobe and she only wears the newer stuff I've given her--and with Punchy. With Punchy, I gave him a crown and he wore it for a day and then displayed it in his room, so I gave him small furniture items until he replaced the crown with one of them and now the crown is in his wardrobe and he wears it, even through about a month of TTing.

Wait, really? He wears the crown? I thought they just wear it for one day then display it 100% of the time. I will try that. But to answer your question, yes, i am fairly sure that what i said about nan’s clothing is accurate, but i would not wager my life on my certainty. I’ll experiment a bit with it more. I reported my villager in question to isabelle and told her i had a problem with their clothing, not that i expected that to work, but i figured it was worth a shot. I dont think it worked but i did this “yesterday” in game, aka like 15 minutes ago real time lol

It's so frustrating that there's no way to completely reset a villager - wardrobe AND house..

Just to be completely clear: Punchy wore the crown I gifted him for one day, and then displayed it in his house. After that, he never wore it anymore and I was disappointed, so I started gifting him small items such as a pet bed and a baby bear to see if he'd replace the crown with them. Eventually he did, and now this displays when I check his "wardrobe" (it's really a refrigerator lol):

He also has that flower dress in his wardrobe now as he put something else in its place lol, but that was very recently so I haven't seen him wear it yet. Sometimes he also has a kids smock in there, which I gifted him on his birthday on the 11th and which he continues to swap out with his default shirt very frequently. He does also wear the crown sometimes.

With Marina, I had to deliver a gift to her from another villager and it contained an instant muscle suit. She wore it and it was hideous and, as you said, reporting to Isabelle didn't really work. So I gifted her a mom's homemade apron, a chima jeogori, and a blossom dress, and now she consistently only rotates between those 3 items and her default one. Unfortunately she doesn't have any kind of storage in her home so I don't have a screenshot of what her wardrobe contains, though. :(

I'm not sure why this apparently doesn't always work and why, according to what you said, they sometimes wear clothing that's on display? It seems really strange and confusing honestly and I really wish that complaining to Isabelle would just reset their wardrobe to only contain their default outfit!

I’m sorry but you cannot just post this and then NOT show us a pic of Marina in the instant muscle suit. Inquiring minds want—no, NEED—to know.

Woah, first of all, i didnt know you could check their wardrobe omg. What if i dont want them to wear the item or display it in their home. Maybe im just misremembering the nan sweater situation, but im fairly sure that’s how it worked. Or maybe she would display it on and off and put it in and out of her wardrobe so it looked like it was in both? Idk. I’m definitely glad i asked because this was super helpful! Thanks!

If they have some sort of storage in their home, whether it's an actual wardrobe or a refrigerator, you can!

I honestly have no idea what you would do if you only wanted them to wear their default outfit and nothing else, other than maybe buying several copies of said outfit and hoping they put every single one in their wardrobe rather than displaying them? :( You might also be correct on what you're saying about Nan's sweater, and there's just some sort of confusing RNG coming into play here with how they treat their clothing. I wish there was an easier way to know lol, I'll never understand why reporting their outfit to Isabelle can't just reset their wardrobe or at least remove what they're currently wearing.

Not the most high quality screenshot, but here!

It was a gift from Lily to her after they had a fight and my girlfriend said it seemed more like a revenge gift than an apology.

oh ok. well apparently since it's rocket science to cycle out clothing I guess Judy and Sherb can keep their mildly ugly clothing
I hope they enjoy stern talks with Isabelle because that's what they're gonna have to go through daily
little brats

Okay, so i checked maple’s closet and she has two shirts in there that she never wears and i didnt give her so i have no idea what that means. Ive never seen her in them at all, and the one shirt she does change into was not in her closet (or on her body or in her house). I’m just confused lol.

That's... so weird, I really wish I could be of more help :( Did you adopt Maple from someone else? And if not, did other villagers ask you to deliver her gifts that may have been clothes? Or have you TTed to her birthday, and had friends visit who may have given her clothes as gifts (which you can definitely do because I and another friend gave shirts to Beau for his birthday on my gf's island and he wears them)? And also, is the shirt she changes into that isn't anywhere to be found possibly a custom design you have displayed in your Able Sisters--or that may have been in the Able Sisters of her previous owner if she's adopted? Because I honestly didn't think they could just go and buy their own clothes from Able Sisters but who knows at this point...sorry about all these questions, just trying to figure out how this could be happening!

Yes, villagers will display and use the same piece of clothing. Antonio displays a tank top I gave him, but he also uses it sometimes.

Also, I checked on Marcie's wardrobe, and there was a red simple parka inside of it. I never gave her a red simple parka, but I gave one to Alfonso, who never wore it more than once (he seems obsessed with the black doublet I bought him after I saw him at Able's drooling over that thing). Ir seems like some villagers secretly give things to the others, more specifically clothing, as I never saw something like this related to actual furniture.

Really? That's so weird and sounds super frustrating lol, I guess I just lucked out when the methods I used for getting Marina to stop wearing her muscle suit and getting Punchy to wear his crown instead of display it worked for me. In all of my TTing I've never seen my villagers wear anything that I didn't know where it came from and I would kinda hate if they did unless it looked good on them.

Yeah, but the funny thing is: Marcie never wore that simple parka. I only discovered it because I accidentally pressed A in front of her wardrobe.

It’s just so weird and interesting. No, i got maple from a nook miles ticket tour. I have never given her the clothes, none of my friends have come for her birthday, i do not deliver my villager’s packages specifically because i hate when they get ugly shirts or furniture (i also didnt do this in new leaf), and no, she wears the kiddie smock, i gave it to her. She wears it all the time. She actually wore it both before and after i checked her dresser. It was not in her dresser or on her body or in her home. She had a retro sweater and a rainbow sweater in her dresser, and again, never gave either to her, no one has, shes never worn them. Also, i gave her a houseplant and she replaced her flower crown that she had displayed in her house, which also did not appear in her wardrobe. I guess ill see if she wears it. I’m really just curious about the mechanic at this point haha

(See my above post for context). I was thinking this since maple has the rainbow sweater and retro sweater in her dresser. Ive given both of these items to stitches, BUT stitches has the rainbow sweater displayed in his house and was actively wearing the retro sweater when I checked Maples dresser.

Also, to clarify, my villagers have never worn anything that i didnt know where it came from. Bob is the only exception but he is from another player so that person must have given him that clothing.

Update is, she wore it. She never wore it while it was displayed in her house so maybe it is true that they cannot both display and wear clothing items.

I wish there was a way.... Raymond and Ribbot got into a fight and Raymond asked me to give Ribbot a gift... I did and when Ribbot opened it, it was a pink dress!

Now, that crazy little goofball Ribbot wears it every so often.. A Jock robot frog wearing a pink dress talking muscles! LOL
