Villager Spacing Question

I am starting a new town and will be plot resetting villagers into specific locations and have a few questions. I was curious as to how many spaces have to be in between each house? How much space would I have to leave if I wanted to plant trees or flowers in between them later on? Lastly, how close to bridges can villagers houses get?

Flowers can be right next to them. Trees one space away. Between each house....I'm thinking 2 spaces and I'm not sure about the bridge.

I would say 6 spaces away from each other would be optimal, unless you're aiming for a Neighbourhood-type area, then I would say 3 spaces apart would be good enough.


Having 6 spaces in between each house gives you a lot of room for paths and decorations, possibly some PWP.

Houses can get 2 (maybe even one) space from a bridge. If it's that close, you can demolish the bridge but you can't rebuild it in the same spot (Isabelle will say a villager's house is too close).

I personally like my houses to be random and spaced out far, just so I have a lot of room for different pathways and pwp configurations. I do, however, like all of the houses to be on one half of the town, usually above the river, because I like the bottom half to be more natural, with the campsite and the park.

Villager houses can also be a minimum of three spaces above and below each other, I found this out when plot resetting in my second town want wanted three of them in a neat vertical row. Good luck with your new town OP!

villagers need at least 2 spaces behind and in front of them and 2 spaces apart from another home. They have to be one space away from a cliff or river.

Side by side they need to be 2 spaces in between. If you want to do vertically it needs to be three because of the door space. Just think of everything having an invisible extra layer and that's how much space you would need.
If you want to place gardening things in between add one more space and that space would be for the trees, bushes, bamboo etc. and also flowers don't really matter since they can go almost anywhere.
My town has villagers in a row with 2 spaces and flowers in between so if you need a better way to visualize that, you can explore my dream town anytime to get ideas c:

Bridges, that's an iffy matter. If you already placed them, then villagers would just need about 2-3 (can't really remember) spaces in between. If you place them down after a villager moved into a spot then it would be 4 spaces, sometimes 5 in the case of a pwp or something else blocking it.

each house has a one space buffer at all sides, except for the front which has a two space buffer. they can't overlap or be shrunk in any way, so just think of them as invisible walls.

rivers and stuff have no buffer of their own, so you can put a villager house one space from them. however, villager houses have to be 2 spaces away from eachother at the sides of 3 at the front/back.

bridges need 4 spaces of their own on each side (plus one space for a villager house if you want one there).
