I feel the need to ask this, because I find it kind of funny. Even the villagers I'm the best of friends with try to scam me into buying fake artwork for ridiculous prices, VASTLY over-priced furniture items, etc. And it works in reverse, where they want things of mine and don't want to pay diddly-squat for them.

For the longest time, I just let things be and continued on without doing anything like that to them. I thought it would improve the way they tried to scam me in multiple ways, but it never has. So I started to feed them a little of their own medicine by over-pricing Re-Tail items for them to buy. Sometimes they refuse, but other times they're happy to buy.

I figure, in the end, it probably about evens out.

Though I'm curious, if you have scammed your own villagers, what's the biggest price you've gotten them to pay? And what's the most/least they've offered for something of yours or asked you to pay for something of theirs?

I have gotten some pretty bogus offers from my villagers, but I've done the same to them... ^^ Flora actually bought a beehive I put in re-tail for 2,000 bells! lol

Oh, ouch! Literally. XD

I decided my goody-twoshoes ways had to stop after Marshal sold me a fake painting for over 8,000 bells.

Somebody scammed me out of Cookie when I was new to another forum, way to go them! :)

I do not know what other villager types do this, but I know every time Hamphrey the cranky hamster tries to sell me a painting, he makes sure to say something along the lines of, 'Mind you, I am not sure if this is the genuine article or not. Do you still want it?' And my friendship level with Hamphrey is high, if that matters.

Ahh, you might want to read the first post! This isn't about getting scammed by people on this site/any site. XD;

Ah, yeah! That's true. It might have to do with villager type, actually. Fang (Cranky wolf) offered me a painting and also said he wasn't sure if it was real or fake. And Marshal is a Smug, so maybe they're more likely to sell it to you just saying that it's their "treasured possession" but they're "willing to sell it to you".

Wow, people should learn to read.

Julian and Klaus are always the villagers who seem to want to sell me paintings. I've always wondered if this was random or if smugs are more likely to sell those, or what. These days I usually just buy what a villager is selling to avoid the 'bell-pincher' rep, unless its something that will mess up their house. It would be pretty funny to scam them back though.

I can't really remember them trying to sell me any for much more than 5k though. Maybe I'm lucky.

Hm, that's really interesting. Julian hasn't tried to sell me any paintings yet, but I haven't had him in my town for very long. But Marshal has already sold me two fakes, and he's a Smug. Maybe it's a Smug and Cranky thing, with the smugs being fine with scamming for fakes, but the cranky ones at least letting you know that they don't know whether it's fake or real.

Marshal has been a real butt to me, though. I've bought one for 6,000 bells that was fake, and one for over 8,000 that was fake. It became something of a running joke in my daily ACNL liveblogs a few weeks ago.

For my villagers scamming me its happened with paintings 2 out of the 3 times Ive bought one. Those were priced between 5,000 to 8,000 bells. Ive never scammed my villagers, but if I get a Lazy villager in my campsite I always do the lazy camper trick :)

I think I only got a real painting from one once, a previous cranky villager I had (Avery). Otherwise, they have literally ALL sold me fakes. lmao

Well, now that I've heard you mention it, I can't help but ask... what is the "Lazy Camper Trick"?

Cube always offers, like, 50-90 Bells for stuff of mine.

But it's totally his life's savings, youguys.

Totally.

....Whatever, he's my bae, so I always let him have it X3

Scamming them? No way! If I want them to buy it, I price slightly below 4x what I can get for selling at ReTail. They seem to pay that as long as it's below 10K. It's not like I force them to buy the items. I mean, I'm not shoving them down the aisle to the item I want them to buy and blocking every avenue of escape whenever they try to wander off...oh, wait. Yes, yes I am. That's exactly what I'm doing...

Apparently the lazy camper trick is to get them to play What Do I Want to Eat? The right answers have been recorded online, and then they will pay 4x the price for those pricey island bugs. I had to Google it after I read it here:)

Not really. Diva and Felicity like to offer me WAY overpriced items, and then re-offer them at a more reasonable price OR just give me it for free.

Oh, jeez, just remembered all the fake art Kyle passed on to me. A scary painting turned out real, after only... four fakes? Meh, I have a hard time saying no to my fave villagers, heh.

Yeah, Beau would do that same thing to me. XD "Life Savings" of 59 bells. Mm hmmm, sure. (But yeah, I usually do sell it to them anyway. As long as it's not something atrocious for them to wear or something that would look awful in their house, anyway.)

Ah, interesting! Thanks for cluing me in to the trick. I probably should have just looked it up, myself, but I didn't know if that was the "official" name for it or not. Nonetheless, thanks for telling me!

As far as the scamming goes... well, 4x the price at Re-Tail is kind of what I consider scamming, since it's over-pricing what the item is actually worth. (Although the Nooks do that ALL the time, so it's difficult to really buy anything near it's actual price.) And yeah, I go shoving them toward what I want them to buy, too. XD I also use that trick to try to get them to put nice furniture in their houses or take something back that they tried to sell there that was really awesome from their house.

Yeah, I've had both Felicity and Cookie lower the price once for me, but they never give them for free. I guess I'm just not lucky enough. Hahaha. Pretty sure I'm good friends with both of them, so I don't think friendship is in the equation there. Just luck, I suppose~

Yeah, despite how many times I tell myself "DON'T TRUST THEM. THEY SOLD YOU FAKES ALREADY." I always give in and try. And only once have I ever received a real painting from one of them (a villager I no longer have). Smugs have never given me a real one. At least not as of yet. Maybe Marshal or Julian will surprise me yet. Who knows.

Bunnie always tries to overprice the item she's trying to sell me, but when I say no she always ends up giving it to me for free lol

Shari sold me like... twenty fake paintings and not a single real one. ):< I had her for almost an entire year and I ignored her a lot, so I guess that was her payback.
