Has this happened to anyone else? I got Huck several months ago (in June) from someone else who gifted him a couple outfits including a red groovy shirt. It's been in his "closet"/inventory since then, and he has worn it every once in a while.

But just now (in November), I saw Huck with a thinking bubble, and when I talked to him, he said he wasn't sure his groovy shirt "fit his style anymore" and then asked my opinion-

When I answered no, he gave me the shirt! I guess that means its not in his "closet" anymore? I've never seen this before, is this new? If so its a great way to get rid of unwanted clothes from you or others!

This never happened to me with clothes but a month or two (maybe three) ago, I got this option with a piece of furniture for Raymond I think. I never gave him anything other than workbenches at first and he was 100% original (bought him from someone).

I'm not sure if I've seen that, but I've had my villagers run up to my second character and give her clothes that I had previously gifted them.
That's interesting too! Do you think that was a coincidence (it just happened to be the same clothing item and style), or did your villager stop wearing that specific clothing item once they gave it to her? Did they say that your first character gave it to them?

Does that mean the piece of clothe is definitely removed from the guardrobe ?
One of my villagers gave me his horrendous ballon hat offered by his former owner (who is a friend of mine and did that on purpose 😬). I was so happy the villager gave it back to me, but I'm still worried 🤣

I'm pretty sure it's removed from their wardrobe because I never saw them wear it again. It would be good for clothes you don't want them to have, but it annoyed me because they were giving away clothes that they looked cute in. I don't remember if they said Livia gave it to them. I don't think they did, but I'm not sure.

I've recently had this happen to me as well; I'm 90% sure Agnes returned two outfits that I had previously gifted to her because I have only seen her in her default outfit this week. I've had Agnes for at least three months now, so I wonder if this aspect of returning items that you previously gifted to a villager is only observed if they have resided on the island for a while.

I've had this option come up for both clothing and furniture; I only gift my villagers clothing that I've tried on them at Harv's Studio and foreign fruits.

Shep asked me, I said no, and he said he wouldn't wear it.

SIX MONTHS LATER, I kicked him out because he wore it every day.

Twas the hideous suit of lights. >..<

Oof unfortunate, maybe he continued to wear it because he didn't give it to you, so it wasn't officially removed from his wardrobe!

That would be interesting! I wonder if this will start happening with my other villagers too, since by now I've had them all on my island since at least July.

I've had many villagers give me their shirt, and at the same time they've continued to wear it. :)
I've never seen any shirt removed from any villager's inventory.

I wish Kiki would do that for me. I gave her some shirt, without checking it first, and it turned out to be something akin to what the Boss Baby wore.

I don't know, but I get clothing a lot from my villagers. The after school jacket is a staple on my island, I swear. And I don't even know why. I think I've received and sold like ten of them.

i had no idea they could do this! that's relieving to hear, since i've misclicked in the past and accidentally gifted my villagers clothing rather than a wrapped stack of fruit... i think the worst incident to date was when i gave dobie a hideous baby romper.

that jacket is all the rage on mine as well! must be what's hip right now in the anthropomorphic animal world. 🤔

have this happen now and then, but am not sure its their inventory one. Since I gifted Skye a halo she wore once then displayed in her house. Later she came up and said she didn't need it so gifted me a halo, but a week or so later saw it displayed in her home again. So unless she got a second halo from somewhere don't think they pull from their inventory for this kind of thing

Rodney did this with me, but it was for an article of clothing that afaik he did not previously own. I think it's no different from when they ask you to buy one of four things they're getting rid of.

It's funny, in NL and before I remember the villagers giving you stuff that they actually owned.

This sometimes happens to me when one villager gifts another a clothing item. When I hate the outfit I tell them it doesn't look good, and rarely to they give back the clothing (which I can only assume is not in their inventory anymore). Most of the time though they just remove the clothing and keep it, and I end up restarting the day because no way in hell am I gonna let them keep ugly clothes in their wardrobe.

There are a couple instances I've had that are similar to this. You'll know for sure when he does or doesn't where the shirt again, but I think it's one of these two things:

1. I have gotten this exact dialogue a couple times from my smug villager, but I got him from my campsite, so the item in question was something he was never given/never wore. I think the dialogue is a variation of the way villagers sometimes randomly give you gifts, and the item could just be randomly selected from the gift RNG (similar to how they give you an item back when you give them a gift). It's possible it was just a coincidence that 'groovy shirt' was selected, and it wasn't actually *the* groovy shirt in his wardrobe.

However...

2. Villagers adopted from other islands will sometimes give you an article of clothing from their past island. I got Audie from another player, and she was wearing a halo from her old island for a while, but one day she just gave it to me. Same with Marina and a shirt from her old island. The difference was the dialogue prompt - I didn't get an option to decide, they just gave them to me and said they wanted me to have it or something along those lines. After that they never wore it again, so in that case, it was the actual item.
